Identifying Shimano PTFE-coated brake cables

Postby Zingzang » Fri Jan 04, 2013 17:01 pm

I've just bought four Shimano brake cables (inners) from a well-known online seller. I ordered two standard stainless steel and two PTFE-coated ones. The PTFE ones cost considerably more.

The brake cables arrived in unmarked bags and look identical in every way, so I had no means of telling them apart. I phoned the seller, who said the PTFE ones differ in having a score line around the nipple, which the standard ones lack. I told him that none of the cables sent to me have this line. The seller then said he wasn't sure if this line was in fact the way of telling them apart but I should send them back explaining the problem.

The question is, does anyone know how to tell apart standard Shimano stainless steel brake wires and the PTFE-coated ones?

I'd guess that the PTFE ones would be smoother to the touch. Apart from that, I have no idea. Hopefully, someone will come along and help you. It's quite easy to tell different brands of cables apart from each other but, seeing as they're both Shimano, it may not be that easy.

As above: the PTFE should feel "slicker" due to the coating, apart from that they look the same.

Sorry can't be of more help.
This is only a joke by the way, I am in no way implying directly or otherwise that there is any kind of link or similarity between BR and North Korea :)

the only ptfe coating is on the newer 7900DA and probably the 9000 series.
If they r out of the original packing, which would have the part no on it, then i dont see how you would tell for sure - look on Shimano/Techdocs/other/sub assembly for part numbers.
Alot of cheap online bits are from stripped down oem parts, so no original packing, fine for a RD or a Crank, not so good for other bits.

The appearance, feel, etc. is identical. There is no difference in slickness etc. All nipples have "KD" and an "S" above three dots embossed on them.

Probably come from a 'shop box'. I've bought loose Jagwire brake and gear inners before.
