Shifter issue

Postby Dinyull » Mon Mar 11, 2013 13:30 pm

I had a problem a couple of weeks ago, the shifter for the front deralieur wouldn't budge - it was stuck in gear. Had a little fettle and managed to get the shifter to move but now it won't change gear.

It will move the deralieur, enough to change if you hold the lever, however the change doesn't 'stick' - it will change back as soon as you let the lever go.

Any ideas??? LBS is last resort as I'm just about to be made redundant so any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

What shifters are they. I've had a couple of 105 shifters stuck where the cables have failed and basketed in the shifter.

Tiagra (not sure which year). Like I say, the cable and deraileur move with the shifter but the change won't stick.

I'm pretty sure it's the shifter and not the deraileur, as there is no click coming from it.

But if the cable is fraying inside the shifter it could be preventing the ratchet from working properly. My last case of dodgy shifting turned out to be the cable starting to disintegrate inside the shifter. Glad I caught it before it failed completely. Would've been tricky fishing the bits of wire out of the internals.

Ah, ok. I'll check that out thanks. I had a look at the internals of the shifter last weekend but couldn't really see anything. That cable needs replacing anyway as it's frayed at the deraileur end really badly.

Chop off the frayed end before you try to pull the cable back through from the shifter

Cheers for the help, just replaced the cable but still having the same problem.

When I opened up the shifter a piece of plastic and a piece of metal were loose (both had snapped/broke off, both 2 or 5mm in size). I'm a noob when it comes to maintenance so not sure what it's off, but have a feeling it's whatever 'latches' the gear change.

Any ideas if this can be repaired or will I have to replace the shifter?

Cheers

What make/model of shifter? SRAM or Campagnolo can be repaired whereas with Shimano, it usually means a replacement
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

Shimano.

Thanks for all the help, looks like I'll have to put it in the shop.
