Compare computer calories burnt during roller vs road

Postby maxima » Tue Nov 20, 2012 02:44 am

My question is specific to an average computer with calories calcs. I have simple one which shows calories based on speed and weight (no HR)... I know this is a bit lame but I'd appreciate if anyone has an actual information rather than just a guess or critics..

Say the computer shows X cals during indoor ride on a roller. Obviously its formula designed on assumption of average road ride but a roller has less resistance than tarmac plus no external factors which might be factored in the formula..

Here is the question : what a sensible multiplier would you apply to X to receive Y - calories the same computer would show on the same ride on the road (note the same computer and the same ride (by the same ride I mean that you'd burn same actual calories during both rides not computed calories)).

I know it feels like a trick question but it is quite simple. If I worked same hard on the road - what cals I'd expect from my computer? Should I divide X by 2 or 3 or 0.5 ?

No average computer can calculate calories metabolised. End of.

Only accurate power meters come close, and even then you still need to know your normal gross efficiency, and it can't take into account acute changes in efficiency.

Calorie estimates provided by anything else (bike computers, HR monitors, on line websites, GPS data etc) are not usually much more than light comic relief, and certainly not sufficiently reliable to make sound decisions regarding training or diet.

I think it's an appropriate time for this copypasta ..

But over time, the daily grind gets in the way and you miss the things that really matter, even though they are right in front of you, staring you in the face. I think the next time you should ask yourself "Am I on the right track here?". I don't mean to be rude but people like you I really pity. So maybe you could use the few brain cells you have and take advantage of the knowledge I have given you now. Good luck.
All the above is just advice .. you can do whatever the f*ck you wana do!
