Mavic Ksyrium Elite S vs Shim RS80...

Postby chortlon-sim » Tue Oct 16, 2012 14:57 pm

Can anyone suggest whether there is much difference between the Shimano RS80 Carbon Laminate and the Mavic Ksyrium Elite S?

Other than about £60 less for the RS80s, the weight appears to be comparable. Cheers in advance…

I have used both recently (still on the rs80's) Weight without skewers rs80 1520grams Elites 1580. I found the Elites very stiff and a little harsh, the rs80s on the other hand seem a lot more comfortable but not as stiff although they're plenty stiff enough for general riding. Both wheels are well made and should last well and the bearings in both sets feel superb although I prefer the cup and cone bearings of the rs80's from a maintenance viewpoint. The Elites look better in my opinion, the rs80,s are very understated and from a distance could be mistaken for Shimano's cheaper wheelsets. Both are superb wheels, and whatever choice you make will be a right one.

Cheers, sounds like it's worth saving a few quid and getting the RS80s...

I have the Elites on my road bike and the RS80,s on my cross bike.

Both very good wheels, the RS80 are about 40grs lighter (mainly the front wheel what saves the weight) but do flex slightly more. But as already said they are slightly more comfy.

TBH there is not a lot between them I doubt you will be disapointed with either.

RS80s on your cross bike? Do they survive? I thought they were light roadies for smooth tarmac only??

I have the deep-section version of the RS80's and they're pretty strong. Perfectly in tru after all that I've put them through. On top of that I'm a tall/heavy rider so they are top notch for the price

If I'm 60kg maybe I should go lighter than 1520g??

Only you can justify that question. I don't know what you'll be using them for so I can't comment whether they'd be adequate or if you should go lighter. If you're looking for something significantly lighter than you'll be paying 100's more. I use mine for training/crit races and they do me well. If I were looking to upgrade for something lighter, I'd consider buying Zipps, anything less and the upgrade wouldn't be worth the difference in performance IMO.
