Richmond Park deer

Postby Jonesy12 » Fri Nov 16, 2012 14:40 pm

Just wondering particuarly for those who may cut through or cycle round RP in the dark - how big an issue are the deer?

Tried this for the first time this week at circa 6pm and found the deer were very close to and sometimes on the road, very difficult to see and potentially dangerous yet other cyclists just whizzed on by!

Have any/many people had collisions or near misses with the deer, or am I just being soft?!

Its the same during the day, deer all over the road, I tend to just stop and wait rather than whizzing past potentially startling the deer. Although they are very tame and used to the traffic I don't think its worth it. Have a rest, a biscuit and a drink then set off again!

I know someone who did a 'Fenton', and she got a fine from the Park Warden! Dogs not on leads = stampedes!

This year was the first time for 3 years when I didn't meet a cyclist who'd crashed after colliding with a deer in the week after the clocks change. So I'd say it was pretty common, but I think the people going too fast with too bad lights soon stop going into the park.

I've never had a close call riding at a sensible speed.

Just be cautious of the deer when they're about to cross. Only had a close call with a squirrel once.

Not a big problem if you have a decent light (my Exposure Joystick is about the minimum I'd want).

I have had to stop pretty quickly once or twice so I don't recommend breaking 20 or drafting at this time of year.
