I can't stop looking at the Cervelo S2

Postby Gabbo » Sat Jan 12, 2013 22:52 pm

It's as if I am obsessed! I own a Specialized Tarmac myself with pretty average components (Shimano 105) so you'd think I would be content with what I have got. On the other hand, my friend has a Specialized Allez and he absolutely adores it. Why do I not feel that way about my Tarmac?

I'm forever on different websites reading about and drooling over the Cervelo S2. I think I may have to buy myself one of these next year.

You can purchase the 2012 R5 frame for £1750 too! Yep, will definitely start saving. I'll probably end up selling the tarmac then anyway.

Man, I know the feeling, I have a Tarmac too and it's a lovely ride but I really want a Cervelo, though an R3 or R5. I just bought some new wheels for it to appease my wandering eye but I'm going to keep saving hard then relegate the Tarmac to winter bike status!

I have a r5 vwd 2012 frameset ready to be built as my new summer bike, I have sourced bits from all over Europe to put on it which are also still in the box and yet like you I'm still looking at new bikes and mine isn't even built yet. It's natural my friend. No matter what you have you will always look at other bikes. Never heard the term window shopping. Ha and I ain't talking about actually shopping but I'm sure you get the gist.

I'm always window shopping. Whenever I'm in Kingston I'm forever drooling over their top of the range bikes (Trek's aside) and always upstairs checking out those Colnago's! What beauties they are! But of course, I want a Cervelo S2 and I want it bad. I've never felt connected (emotionally obviously) to my bike

Maybe it's all down to expectations. We know the Tarmac is a good bike so when it does what you expect you're not blown away by it. The Allez is seen as more of a budget, entry level, aluminium bike; so your friend might be impressed by what it can do for the money. Or if he has just started cycling, there's still the novelty factor.

I bought a new car I always wanted, its that good it's an anti-climax. It doesn't excite me as much as driving a 15 year old Ford Fiesta fast as I could ( 30mph of course ;-) ).

Dude, whatever you buy next there will always be something else you want - such is the folly of man!

Buy an S2 and you ll want an S5 or a new set of wheels or Dura Ace etc etc. Even if you get the perfect bike you ll start lusting after something different...

NapD,

How differently did the two bikes perform? And what makes you prefer the latter?

Different breeds; I have an 05 Allez and love it to death, but I doubt I'll be upgrading anything for a while. New tires and new tape/saddle later down the road, but currently I'm content.

I have always loved Cervelos though... sadly all the ones I see are being ridden by guys who just had to get it as their first road bike.

The S2 'felt' faster on flat roads but I can't quantify this, especially as I have not used the R3 with the Zipp wheels however there is a not subtle issue that means I prefer the R3, it lies in the headtube/BB. The R3 definitely feels stiffer when out of the saddle especially at the front end. This stiffness also helps with handling on descents, it feels more accurate.
The other big difference is in ride comfort. The R3 is certainly a smoother ride, in fact it feels incredibly plush compared the S2 which was in fact the harshest bike I've ridden. This due no doubt to the seat stays/narrow seat post.

I have to say that if I had the wherewithal to buy a truly flashy bike, that might well be my choice. And it's good enough for Lizzie Armitstead...

I got a Tarmac SL in 2007. Great bike, very happy with it.

But then last year, I got an S3.

Image

Which is a very, very good bike. :D

Not sure how it compares to an S2 as I haven't ridden one of those, it's supposed to be more comfortable down to the different stays. it's definitely much more comfortable than my Tarmac. I have also test ridden an R3, which was very good. Prefer the S3 as I found the R3 was very aggressive, very quick. Would make an excellent crit bike.
