UK OSM Cycle maps for Garmin Edge

Postby fsman » Sun Jan 13, 2013 20:32 pm

I've been looking for an up to date OSM map which includes UK cycle paths for a road bike.
I tried velomap but the routing seemed off to me.
Other UK OSM maps which had cycle paths seems very old.

So I followed the instructions on the Open Street Map and created my own, and I thought I would share them for others.

You can find them here

Enjoy

http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/
Maps from here are excellent. Both the generic and the lite ones have UK cycle routs on. Easy to set up and are updated regularly.

Also, I suspect that the maps at http://talkytoaster.com/ukmaps.htm will work.

Always good to have a few sources though.

They do but I preferred the Openfietsmaps.

I tried Talkytoaster - it doesn't include UK cycle routes.
I agree that Openfietsmaps looked good and included cycle routes - ditto for openstreetmap.nl
However, I found that the POI icons weren't that great. Also one of them did a route right down the middle of the "River Thames" on my Edge 800 - very strange. I think this is a side effect of it showing the River Boat services in London, and therefore these become an option for routing.

As a result I built my own using the Open Street Map with Cycle Routes offical guide. These are therefore "native" OSM + Cycle Layer maps - and good standard colourful icons too. If it is on with OSM map with the Cycle layer, it is in my map.

I hope these maps will give people to option for a UK focused map.

However, if Talkytoaster issued a map which included UK Cycle routes - then that would be my perfect map for the UK.

Just had a look. The roads are very thin and not easy to see. I will stick with the Openfiets or the Generic from the same site. POIs are not a problem for me. The generic map is not too bad with them anyway. The Openfiets is a bit 'Lite' on them.
