+1 - something like Jif seems to work well on most makes of white bar tape (although the Fizik Microtex on my best bike is usually fine with just the baby ass wipes)

I just use Fairy Liquid on a cloth for my white saddle and this usually works for me. I got the lbs to put black tape on the bike before I picked it up though, I thought the white tape was too much as the bars are painted white also.

However, do note that you never actually see bikes with clean white bar tape on the roads unless virtually new or if they are Microtex'd. In other words, in theory you can keep them clean but in practice you (mostly) won't!

Buy new every month or replace your tape and saddle for black because you just can't be bothered to clean them anymore, then you'll realise that black looks better anyway.

Spray GT85 onto some plain white kitchen roll, rub on bar tape. Works a treat. Read it in a magazine somewhere and swear by it

I now have black bar tape, however when i had white, i first used Jiff, but that started turning the tape a slight yellowish colour, then went onto Groom car upholstery cleaner, its a foam spray, spray it on, it fizzles and eats into the dirt, then whipe it off a few minutes later, works a treat.

Let us be under no illusions here - people with black tape simply have dirty tape but are happy that they can not see the dirt. Those with white tape know when it is dirty and want to clean it :-)

This is true. It is why people who say that black bikes are easier to keep clean are hopelessly wrong. Black bikes are actually hell to keep clean as it is hard to see which bits are clean and which are not.

However, what you missed is in your second sentence. I'll fix it for you!

BTW to these tricks work on the foamy sort of white bar tape. I tried cleaning the tape of a mates Bianchi (a bit pointless as he is the sort of person who covers anything white with muck as soon as he sees it) and failed miserably.

Okay, personal result so far:

GT85 - 0
Soapy water + old (or wifes) toothbrush - 1

I find the beat method is to remove the tape and place in bin, then replace with black bar tape.

Don't clean it! Have the rest of your bike looking pristine but the tale of the tape show that you actually ride the thing.

warm soapy water and a fresh scourer sponge. When that stops working its new tape time. Nobody is going to stand inches from my bike bars to observe the odd stain, anyway.

As above, baby wipes work a treat.
