Update: Now have 21 bikes. That's after we offloaded a few, too. <<Gulp>>

Adult size = 1 x commuter, 2 Cross bikes, 1 obsolete X bike (eyeing up to give away), 1 racer, 1 tourer, 1 hybrid, 1 childback tandem, 1 TT cannondale, 1 fixed wheel Dave Lloyd, 1 cheap freestyle BMX

Kiddy = 4 x Islabikes, 1 Halford's BSO MTB, 1 racing mini BMX, 1 spare 16" wheel character bike, 12" BSO without stabs, 12" BSO with stabs, 1 balance bike.

It gets serious confusing keeping track of the innertubes & spare tyres.

?12 of the bikes are not in regular use: waiting for someone to grow into them or kept as spares for visitors/odd events/sentiment. We should seriously consider using them as wall decorations.

Projection is that in 2 years we will be "down" to just 18 bikes. For the 6 of us, or 3 each! :)

Not counting spare wheels (at least 4 sets), small trikes & scooters, either. My garage is a jungle of rubber, metal & wheels.

You only need two tools: WD40 and Duck Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the tape.

That is actually a really great question! We have quite a few bikes. I have 2 bikes - one mountain bike and one city bike (to drive the kids around and all), my hubby has 3 bikes - one mountain bike and two restored road bikes from the 70's we found in a friends basement. The kids have 3 bikes - a really tiny one that doesn't quite fit them anymore and two large ones :) That makes it 8 bikes in one household!

Hmmm... that would be 12 at the moment.

My Tricross for general use
My old and battered but still running Trek, bought in an emergency when my beautiful Felt Pro broke a rear stay pushing too hard up a steep bit.
My afore mentioned Felt which is hung up and gradually being eaten for parts.
My old Saracen which is just about a runner.
My wifes Ridgeback
Daughters Claude Butler
Daughters BSO won from Halfords and probably will go to Uni with her in the hope it gets knicked.
Older sons Pinnacle
Older sons Rockhopper now too small a frame
Younger sons new Rockhopper which he thinks is great.
Younger sons Kone 24" and now too small.
20" Rbk bike now for sale.

Way too many! I don't even want to contemplate going to count. I know it's over 20 which for a family of five seems a bit ridiculous. And that includes two tandems and a triplet. So no problem getting everyone out for a ride, at least technically if not motivationally. I was kind of relieved recently when one got stolen but the thieves kindly left another lesser model in exchange. How strange.

Blimey! Read this thread and thought I was in with a chance of being sad enough - won't even bother only having 10 between the two of us!!

What a great topic. We live in Canada so cycling isn't always in season but fortunately for us we were lucky enough to be able to purchase a condo in Florida where we go in the winter, so we have 2 bikes in Canada and 2 in Florida, here is how they break down:

Canada:
1 Hybrid Road Bike
1 Mountain Style Bike

Florida:
1 Hybrid Road Bike
1 Touring/Offroad bike (quite versatile)

I also saw last week on one of the Yahoo stories that an engineer in India I believe is working on a Carboard based bike made from completely recycled materials that can be brought to market for less that $30, we'll definitely be looking at those as well!
