Suggestions for the Editors (they're polite!)

Postby 2007-06-24 » Wed Jul 11, 2007 19:29 pm

Can I be so bold as to make a few suggestions?

---------------------------------------------

Can you start to include some meaningful info in the <title> tags?

Using the browser history, I can't see which forum threads are which as none have titles.

Something like, perhaps:

bikeradar | forum | commuting | Commute distance

---------------------------------------------

On viewing a forum page, e.g., Commuting:
http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=40012

The 'breadcrumb' bit next to the 'New Post' button just says:
Bikeradar Forum Index -> General

There is no mention of the fact I'm in the 'Commuting' section. Could that be changed?

To something like:

Bikeradar Forum Index -> Commuting -> General

With the link to 'Commuting' being to, for example, the filtered view for 'Commuting':
http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/index.php?c=7

---------------------------------------------

Some of the fourm pages don't contain data - for example, I got an email to say there was a new reply to a thread I'd posted in, and the email contained this link:
http://www.bikeradar.com/forum/viewtopi ... 2#14525792

But it contains no messages.

---------------------------------------------

On this page:
http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=40012

the 'Commute distance.' thread says there are 15 pages - if I click on the '15' link, I am told: 'No posts exist for this topic'

---------------------------------------------

Forgot to say - is it possible to search the forum?

When I use the main search option in the top-right, it doesn't seem to search the forums.

Is that one for later?

No! Other way round! :)

Commute distance | commuting | forum | bikeradar

It's something that nearly every forum admin seems to manage to get wrong. When I've got lots of tabs open, or lots of instances of my browser in my taskbar, i want the text to still be meaningful as the bars get shorter.

Say i'm in the MtB part, reading topics on "How much did it cost" "I need new tyres" "which forks should I buy" and "Chris King release 150mm hub", it makes far more sense to condense down to
[How mu...][I need...][[Which ...][Chris ...]
than
[Bikera...][Bikera...][Bikera...][Bikera...]

For the former, the titles are still worth having. For the latter, they might as well not be there.

That's the point Big Red S and others are making, and I do like Big Red S's idea of the way the title should be structured.

I've put a request into our 'Please do this' system for the developers.

I'm on it :)

What I will aim for is something on the lines of just showing the topic title in the explorer bar/tab. We can't over complicate it and turn it into a breadcrumb, which I will also look at, if its possible!
