premature wear of bibshorts

Postby bradash » Sun Aug 29, 2010 08:50 am

My last four pairs of bibshorts have all worn through early.
My saddle is nearly new so cannot be the cause.
The holes seem to be symetrical , either side of the pad at the buttock.
At first i wondered if my choice of short was to blame so i changed brands and types each time it occured.
the shorts were the endura mt500, a pair of polaris, santini and then i forked out for some assos uno shorts which are showing wear after two rides.
i'm 5ft 11 and 76 kilos and pretty fit so body type is not an issue.
can you suggest some hard wearing shorts or should i keep my purchases cheap?

Probably best to post your question in the Road "Buying Advice" section of the forum. You'll get more answers there.

Dude - you must have cottoned onto the fact that if everyone on here got through Assoss et al at the rate of one every half dozen rides things things would be quite different.

its gotta be a rubbing somewhere. Suggest that you look at your saddle again, particularly the rails - measurements on the side if inscribed are enough to rub away the lycra and where the rails meet the seatpost (dependant on how far/back you have your saddle). stitching on the saddle etc

I've got a sell italia and have had to cover up the markings on the rails with electrical tape - or that will cause bobbling and wear very quickly.

Could be the velcro on your seat pack. This will rub a hole on the inside of your thigh!

what saddle...? Also a pic of your set up would help.

I had similar issues, which I traced back to my shorts rubbing on the seat clamp hardware...

This normally just affects one side, as I know to my cost :(

I have exactly the same problem and have eliminated the usual suspects, seat pack, saddle and bike fit.

I dropped my saddle a few millimetres and that made difference in slowing the wear down but the shorts are still wearing and the damage is visible in terms of wear, in my case it's only on one side.

So I would also be very interested if anyone can shed any light on the issue.

Maybe you need to wax or something. You sure they aren't wearing from the inside-out!? 8)

Have you had someone look at your cycling technique? Do your hips rock when you cycle? If so that'd mean more rubbing, solved by dropping your saddle.

What about where you sit on the saddle? Should you be further forward? Is your weight on the sit bones?

You are getting wear because the material is rubbing against something abrasive. It could be stitching on the saddle, the edge of the saddle, the rails etc. It could be your motion on the saddle. Have you got access to a turbo trainer? Use it and have someone watch you pedal

I have had exactly the same problem in the past. Mine turned out to be Fizik saddles... Any fizik saddle with side flex ribs, according to fizik my body shape is incompatible with wing flex. That's why I now stick to Antares, ares, and the flatter fizik saddles without wing flex... No more wear!

I found out with masking tape markers on wear, and having an observer look closely at my ass on my turbo trainer... Lo and behold exactly on the ribs on the arione!

Its either your saddle , the shape of your butt or something to do with your techique ( moving around the edge of saddle too much )

I own 2 of the shorts you have mentioned and have never had that problem

I ride a Spech Toupe Saddle

have had this problem also, my old nike shorts, us postal and discovery channel both lasted about a season before wearing thru, always same place.i then bough a pair of northwave shorts these lasted me 6 weeks, about 12 rides! i managed to get lbs to exchange them for some descentte ones, only showing a slight rub mark, however it is strange someone mentioned fizik saddles as this is the brand i have had for past few years.

My Assos started bobble on the inner leg after a couple of rides, could not find any part of the bike that was anywhere near the area. After 2 years the back panel just above my ars* went completely see through, not impressed for £120 shorts.

I have just sent back a pair of Assos Uno's to Ribble that I bought in April.
They were showing signs of wearing with a rough patch on the outside of the left thigh, nothing rubbing there, only worn them about 8 times.

Wow, guys this is exactly the same issue I am having. I got a replacement set of Assos F5 Uno shorts less than 2 weeks ago and have worn them twice and they have a hole in the lycra under the insert after just 120 miles. I am currently looking at the saddle as I'm currently using a Prologo Nago PAS. This model has embroidered stitching on the top and has the embossed logo on the sides. I don't think it's a bike setup issue as I had a BG Fit done in the Ruislip Specialized concept store 4 months ago. I'm seriously tempted to get rid of the saddle and get a Flite or something with a smooth finish to try out but I still need to get the shorts replaced again.
