New hybrid bike advice - Vitus Vee-1 / Sirrus 2012 / other?

Postby davidmt83 » Thu Sep 06, 2012 12:05 pm

Hi,

I'm looking to buy a new bike and my LBS recommended the Sirrus 2012, selling for £370. After reading up on this I get the impression this is a fairly well regarded bike but I can't help thinking it's a little overkill for what I want - which is just to zip around the local area, keep fit and enjoy cycling.

There seems to be quite a lot of love for the Vitus Vee-1 so I'm wondering if this is more for me? I assume the 19" frame will be okay for a 5" 11 guy...

Unfortunately I'd have to store it in my garden so could anyone recommend a lock / bike cover? Any suggestions on helmets, llights and mudguards too?

Lots of questions - appreciate any advice! Thanks

David

I've just sold my Sirrus Sport 2012 (after getting a road bike). Fantastic bike and that's a pretty good price. It might be overkill but think what might happen if you really get into cycling? You'll then have a bike suitable for your needs rather than a more basic model that you've grown out of?

Or not...but something to think about.

Sks chromoplastic are the (gold) standard mudguards for the sirrus and many other bikes. As for locks...you'd probably wanna make sure its a sold secure silver or gold standard d lock, and abus is my preferred supplier :)

Hi

I have the 26" Vitus Vee singlespeed which I use for a daily commute of 8 miles either way. Its light and fun to ride plus seems resistant to knocks/abuse. Ideal tool for the job. Had it six weeks now with no issues and daily use, cracking value for money.

Just don't. Get a road bike with some gears at first. If you're getting back in to cycling don't make it harder on yourself, just get something that you can enjoy and continue using if you find you want to keep doing it.

I have a Vee-1 that I commute to work and back on, I used to ride my Hybrid but moved to the Vee-1 because it's pretty much indestructable, lighter by a good margin and doesn't look flash enough to attract tea-leaves. If you enjoyed riding a BMX when you were a kid, you'll enjoy a vee-1 :D Since I started riding the Vee, I found my fitness increasing and when I ride my CX bike, I'm able to ride harder. With a SS if you come to a headwind, you have nowhere to hide!

If you look in Workshop, there's a thread about mudguards. I posted a link to the ones I have.

As for locks, I have a Kryptonite, but you need to lock it to a solid object, or go for the "bucket of crete" approach.

Basically you need a bucket, a u-bend from the local DIY place and a bag of ready mix concrete from the same place. You mix the crete in the bucket and put the u-bend in with the concrete the end holes protruding a few mm. Leave it until it's fully set (a couple of days)

When it sets you can run a strong chain through the bend and lock the bike to it. It's a PITA to carry a bike away when it has 30kg of concrete attatched to it.

Can anyone suggest how I choose the 26" or 29" tyres? I assume 26" are more suited to city biking and 29" more MTB...

How would something like the Revolution Track '12 compare to the Vitus Vee 1?

http://www.edinburghbicycle.com/product ... n-track-12

The drop handlebars look to give it another option for staying comfortable riding and the weight is virtually the same.

Alternatively how does the Revolution Courier Single '12 compare to the Vee 1?

http://www.edinburghbicycle.com/product ... -single-12

Thanks!

Personally I prefer the chunkier tyres of the Vee-1, I'm literally just back from the LBS getting 2 rims trued for my CX bike (a revolution) Not knocking the Revolution in any way as they're excellent bikes, but there's a lot to be said for a 26x1.95 tyre. The Vee-1 was on offer today as well when I was perusing the CRC site earlier.

I seem to buy bikes just BEFORE they get reduced.

Expect the 2013 one to be out shortly for big money and a few 2012 to magically reappear in the clearance section at the previous price.

I'll give you 1 guess at the price it comes on sale for... Do we suspect it'll be better or worse spec'd...

Probably be around £280, Can't imagine it being lesser specced as here's nothing really to up or downgrade.

The good news... The Vee-1 has arrived...

The bad news... The biggest gear is too small! On the flat my legs rotate too much. I want a challenge and unfortunately the single gear isn't big enough. Up hills it's fine but anything other just seems too easy. I'm glad I tried a single speed but this particular gear ratio isn't for me.

So I'm now thinking either something from Halfords for <£370 or the Sirrus 2012 for £370.

Please help me decide, all suggestions welcome!

Thank you!

David

I did consider this but I think I'd actually prefer a choice of gears to be honest.

Don't I know it ;) I look forward to when KB is back in work! That aside I'm still not sold on a road bike, I think a hybrid bike is more what I'm after - i.e. not hundreds of miles a week, more chuck it in the car and ride round country parks / trails.
