Low Cost Bike Computer alternative

Postby amun1000 » Mon Aug 20, 2012 12:45 pm

Simple albeit not perfect solution for those that dont want to spend 400-500
What you need:
1 Dell Axim (x50/x50v/x51v) or similar pda running Windows Mobile 5: can be bought off ebay for £1.00 - £40.00
1 Tom Tom Bluetooth Wireless GPS device can be bought off ebay for £1.00 - £20.00
Free Cycle Software one of the many PDA sites - usual googling skills required.

What you get
Full colour touch screen
Large display
GPS
Tracking
Altitude
etc etc

Just need a suitable waterproof bike mount

How about a mobile phone. They are free, and a lot less hassle.

In the 20+ years I've had owning various mobile phones from any number of providers I've never found one that's free.....

I do love this modern thinking that the marketing bods have convinced our youth of - you pay £30 every month for a minimum of 2 years and the iPhone is free

But if you already have a suitable phone it is essentially free to use it as a bike computer.

You can get a Garmin 500 for under 200 quid. Who's spending 400-500 these days?

Assuming you use your phone for more than a couple of calls per month, you need to shop around better then. My contract matches almost exactly what I use, is cheaper than the equivalent sim-only deal, much cheaper than PAYG and they threw in a £500 phone. If that's not free, then I don't know what is!
