Hog Hill - First Race!

Postby mclarent » Sat Feb 28, 2009 23:01 pm

Did my first race (ever) at hog hill today. Dropped on the second lap, and (thanks to throwing my chain  ) got lapped towards the end. In between, did some good work with one guy, and despite my result being awful, I'm buzzing. Tell you what, sat in the main bunch, hearing the sound of the gears turning over, was something else. Fantastic experience, all I can think about now is how to improve next time out!!

I will be racing there this coming weekend, after helping out the weekend just gone (it was our club crit series). Really looking forward to it.

See you at the start line! (and hopefully at the finish line as well!) :)

Yes, it was only the U8,U10,U12 that didn't use the long circuit. Even the U14/U16's went up it a few times.

It will be the full circuit this weekend as well.

How did you get on, I came in 10th in the 4th Cat race, well chuffed with that.

Great experience, and very hard work, but totally enjoyable. Definitely going to to road racing again.

sounds like a painful laugh - I am going to try the Darley Moor circuit in Derbyshire for my first race this coming weekend - a couple of our riders from Beeston CC did it this weekend but got involved in a crash at the start. They couldn't get back into the bunch even when they caught it. Is there an etiquette to it ?

Not sure if there is an etiquette to it, for what it is worth, I was at the back on the bunch on occasions, near and on the front, and in the middle. Unless you put in the effort you would quickly slide to the back.

Finding a small gap and placing your bike in it helps a little, as if you don't someone else will. Riding along rubbing handle bars was a new experience, but there wasn't any problems moving up in the bunch.

Our lads were being told to get out and not move in, in no uncertain terms. I just wondered if that's all part of the gamesmanship or if it's considered dangerous. I can't see how really. My mate said that the bloke who went down in front of him called my mate a **** for riding over him - scary. Anyhow, I shall find out on Saturday.
