Wilier doing a Lancia?

Postby Lagavulin » Sun May 24, 2009 23:18 pm

The bike shop I bought my Izoard from last April from have stopped dealing in Wilier (I'm in the process of a warranty claim for failing paint and lacquer through them) seemingly in favour of Cinelli and Argon 18, and on a scout about, I noticed even Epic Cycles appear to have dropped Wilier.

Anyone know what's going on?

Yeah, I noticed that as well. Even e-mailed them to ask whether it was a temporary thing, or what, but never got a reply. (Had a few other questions as well about their bike range. I know people are enthusiastic about them and I'm sure that's for a reason, but this I was not too impressed with.)

Wot I heard is that the Izoard is such a big seller - that wilier will only sell them to shops if they commit to loads - and are also trying to impose other restrictions - like no mail order sales. With shops struggling for credit & cash flow - they just can't finance wiliers. I have heard from the distrubutor that a shipment of wilier will arrive before june.

I've seen that Cycles UK got the Wilier deal which is like buying a bike from Halfords. My local Cycles UK only goes as far as the Mortirolo. Back in Feb ATB and Cycles UK orgainised a demo day. I bought mine in Cycle Surgery.

What on earth has this thread about Wilier got to do with Lancia?
Life is like a roll of toilet paper; long and useful, but always ends at the wrong moment. Anon.

I wasn't impressed either - they wanted to charge me 10% to use a cycle scheme voucher -and they would only give me a test ride if I had already agreed to buy the bike. I was quite surprised considering how well rated the shop is.

yeah I wondered that. Lancia lost their market in the UK to different reasons - not dealer problems.

Wheelbase are still carrying Wiliers. Can't recommend them highly enough if you're in or near the North West of England.

I have just read this post and see that you have a problem with the paint on your Wilier. I too bought an Izoard last June and some of the lacquer is showing signs of bubbling and the white on the crossbar has turned a creamy/yellow colour. Is this by any chance similar to the problem you had? Has your bike had to be sent away and if so, how long have you been without it? The guy at the shop is dealing with another Wilier with a similar problem to mine and it is being sent away but he doesn't know how long it will be away for. i'm a bit reluctant to send mine away at the moment as i'm off to cycle in France in 5 weeks time.

If the frames are in at ATB in Hastings then there is no reason not to get a new frame in the time it takes to send them the frame and them to send a new one back. Every Wilier dealer should be familiar with this problem as should ATB. In fact ATB should just send the frame to the dealer, the dealer should swap everything over and send the old one back in the same box. That's what happened to mine. It sounds like all the early 2008 have the same problem, it must be costing Wilier a fair bit. The red is a different colour on the later ones, slightly brighter.

Whoa, that does sound a bit harsh  I'm not partaking in C2W but Leisure Lakes advertise the scheme as well (see http://www.leisure-lakes-c2w.co.uk/), and they offered me to order two bikes in, without any obligations on my part.

In the end I decided to go for a LBS, who was slightly more expensive than Epic but at least was prepared to do some work in return for my custom.

Resuscitating this thread cos I've just had a reply from Epic Cycles, which explained why there has been such a delay, and answered my questions very well. In other words: my negative feedback about them turns out to have been unfounded.

The most interesting thing in the e-mail concerned Wilier. They say they have indeed stopped selling them, because of problems with the paintwork and finish. Anyone considering buying one at the mo may perhaps want to bear this in mind.
