Bikely down again

Postby OzSkewer » Thu May 26, 2011 05:26 am

Hi guys

Bikely is once again struggling to run.
I Keep getting:
"The page you are looking for is temporarily unavailable.
Please try again later." on http://www.bikely.com/

and on http://www.bikely.com/maps/createnew/ I get

"Failed to save route - Please try again"

Can you take a look?

Yep, same here. It seems I have rarely depend on the site as it is either not available or slow and unresponsive or won't save routes properly. It becomes a real issue if you embed maps in your blog.

Maybe time to find another route mapping solution.

Bikely is almost down for the count at the moment, a victim of its own success. We have tried to resurrect it but it appears to have passed the point of no return.

We are planning on a major upgrade in July. It's not a small job by any stretch but it will be able to handle the loads expected of it, as well as give users some new features without cluttering up the page.

Hi Jeff,

So until July more of the same to be expected?

Best

How many days are you planning it over, Chris?

(I'm doing in in Aug with a couple of mates over three days. Overnighting in Calais and Amiens... Would be happy to email you the GPX files of the route I'm planning to use. Partly based on experience of the first leg to Dover with some improvements to the Bikely suggested one. Day 2 to Amiens was lifted but day 3 is of my own composition to avoid a horrible slog into Paris on nasty A roads through the burbs)

Chris. Looking at your location you're probably better placed than me to pick a good route from Bridge to Dover but the one suggested by the BHF (on Bikely) had a sh!tty 4 mile leg of being buzzed by lorries.

My alternative goes via Womenswold, Snowdown and the back route into Dover...

Neil, we are running it over 4 days - roughly 70-80m per day. We have a team of 9, 6 of which are occasional cyclists, one usually rides a trike. I'm trying to plot day 3 route from Arras to Venette by zigg-zagging down the line of the A1 (I think). Might have to resort to a paper map-thingy LOL!

As to the route into Dover - no worries as we're catching the Smartie Tube (my vote was for a boat but.....) so we'll hit Canterbury via the line of the A2 out of London and drop down Stone Street to Cheriton.

Cheers, Chris F

I just tried to upload a gpx file of the Monkey Trail at Cannock. The result had about five points on the map, and was no use to anyone.

Is this part of the planned upgrade, or am I being stupid? Is there perhaps a maximum number of points supported? I'm using a track saved from Runkeeper, so there's 600+ points on the track.

It's a great idea, so would be glad to contribute if it can work easily.

Cheers, Gord

The good news is that the work on the upgrade has started - a lot has actually been done over the past year but it's a big job. Or more accurately, fitting in with lots of other big jobs.

The not so good news is that it will take all of July but hopefully not run into August. That's all I know at the moment.

That's good news! All my routes are on Bikely, I don't use anything else...

How is the upgrade going?

It's going... our developer says the work will run into August though

Update: we will be testing it in the w/c August 8th. If all is well then we'll go live with it the following week.

So...is the patient's illness terminal, doctor? Or will we be celebrating an unlikely recovery in the near future?

Looking good, fixing bugs and migrating all the routes over to the new server this week.

How's the upgrade coming along? Bikely still only works some of the time.

Thanks.
