Ibis Mojo SL Build

Postby the_moodster » Tue Aug 28, 2012 13:10 pm

Well I was going to do a build thread, but it turns out I didn't take half the pictures I thought I had going to, so its more of a I built it thread.

Work are getting used to packages like this turning up now! It pays to keep the post room in biscuits:
Image

It was just a re-frame job, I was just going to use the majority of parts from my Marin, obviously some small parts are required...
Image

small parts honest!
Image

Started getting a bit weight weenie with the new bits;
Image

Image

but gave that up when it looked likely to be tipping 12kg

Image

if I didn't like riding it, it could always double as an artwork in the living room!
Image

Image

nearly there, obligatory workshop (study) shot
Image

and she's finished (well...)

An EC90 seatpost with an SLX chainset? Interesting priorities there!

I do like those! Never ridden one, but really want one!

well like I said the weight saving went out the window really quickly, but the double converted triple is a decent weight saving, but mostly i already had it, so line of least resistance: Image

it had it's maiden ride on Sunday. I was up at visiting my folks in Monmouth for the bank holiday, so it was the perfect opportunity to take it for a spin round the Forest of Dean.

Bloody hell she's quick!

Bearing in mind I've been riding a 12 year old Marin since it was not 12 years old this is like night and day. The Marin had almost gone beyond the my old broom point since the only original parts were the front triangle and the saddle. Somewhere along the way (probably on the second set of forks) it had lost something. It steered like a boat, a big boat, it still did everything I wanted it to do, but...

The Mojo turns on a sixpence, and climbs like a mountain goat and I really rather like it!

That said it still needs some tweeking. Switching to 2x9 36/22 from 3x9 42/32/22 has exposed a bit of a hole in the XT cassette, I'm pretty sure it's the jump from 18-24 in the middle of the cassette. I spent good while on Sunday trying to find a ratio that just wasn't in my group any more. I want to keep the granny for those bail out ratios because I don't believe I'm up to 1xanything and I'm not planning on doing anything so silly as training because that's far too committed for what is essentially a hobby. So with all pretence of budget out the window at this point a ten speed 11-32 cassette, M786 shadow+ RD, SLX shifter and 1071 chain should be winging their way from Germany as I type!

In addition for the first time I've felt maybe I could use a wider bar, so I'm investigating my options in the 710ish region.

Cheers, have been lurking in your build thread over the last couple weeks. Something in my build must be excessively heavy, my current weight is only a shade under yours. It's got 660 monkeylite bars at the moment, leaning towards a set of 711 haven I think.

Yeah the havens are a super set of bars, a touch narrow for me so I run the slightly wider havocs, but the haven is the same shape, just narrower and lighter :)

Little delivery today
Image

Turns out I screwed up the order and have ended up with an M670 shifter that won't fit my matchmakers instead of an M660-10 that will, so that'll be going back in the post tomorrow. ars*.

Oh and my Haven Carbon bars should arrive tomorrow. Makes me wish I'd got a Haven carbon post now, for the matchingness. Meh.

Whilst not 'cheap', the Special Blend is corking value.

Haven Carbon bars turned up today, gosh they're really quite wide!

Image

Which also meant I could trim down the steerer having sorted the stack height

Just waiting for the right hand shifter to turn up for the ten speed conversion.
