Night ride....? Do you mean evening or under the cover of darkness?

So, is anyone up for a ride tomorrow morning around 10ish? Start kingswood, then upto brantingham and back. Don't worry our kid if you ain't got the kona sorted, I'll be on my rigid anyway.

Giggsmaster rang me at short notice this morning and we decided to head up onto the North York Moors for what Giggs called a bit of hill climbing. We started in Rosedale and headed out towards Low Bell End  ,and onto Hill Cotes a nice little road climb of about 4 miles,we then headed off road onto the old Rosedale Iron Ore Railway heading towards Rosedale head before it turns back on its self and brings you back below the Lion Inn,past High House farm and onto Bank Top.

From here we was going to carry on taking in Hutton-le-hole/Gillamoor/Rudland Rigg to West Gill Head and then down to Church Houses and the climb upto to Blakey Ridge and the descent back to Dale Head farm and retrace our steps back to the car,but it was clsoe to 6pm and the rain had started to come in.

So we decided it would be fun instead to descend Britains steepest road the Rosedale Chimney and then climb back up it,it is a gradient of 1 in 3 (about 33%),Giggs set off first and was gone by the time we hit the first steep corner,to cut a long story short we both made it up without pushing the bikes, and then came back down for a second time back to the car :D,total distance of 14.4 miles.

Jealous.......

Been up there a couple of times in the last two months. I always get round the corner past the cattle grid and persuade myself it's just not worth it and jump off, lol. (though in my defence i do cycle there all the way from Scarborough over the moors or via Pickering so justify my lack of effort as "pacing myself".......).

Was actually in Rosedale on tuesday but decided to climb up the hill to the right that goes out to Wintergill and Egton (but actually cut back through the forest to Pickering) which is more climbable. Still knackering though. Was contemplating going to Rosedale again yesterday but was the middle of the afternoon by the time i got to Cropton and it looked like the weather was going to take a turn for the worse so ended coming back down the road parallel to the railway line back to Pickering and got back to Scarborough just before it started to spit.

There is one good thing about going up Rosedale Chimney and down to Hutton le Hole though... Speeeeeeeeeed. 52mph on a mountain bike as you dip down to the little bridge with a tailwind is guaranteed to put a grin on your face (or shoot in your pants if there's a sheep stud in the middle of it staring at you).

Believe me,i was close to giving up twice as my legs where killing me as i hadnt been out on the bike for 2 months, this was my 2nd ride in the last week,so when Giggs said are you going to ride up it,i had said id be happy getting round the first corner after the cattle grid :D

I would like to have a go at the full route we had planned before the bad weather kicks in,whether id make it is anouther question tho........
