Bonked

Postby Secteur » Sat Oct 06, 2012 20:23 pm

Bonked hard today... harder than a porn star on viagra... felt like death... the most horrible feeling ever. Started as i was approaching the end of my ride just 3 miles from home (all uphill 4%) and it was just 3 miles too far...

Is there an emoticon for feeling sick?

I suspect it was a combination of not much riding (compared to normal) this last 2 weeks along with some fairly tough dieting this week... I ate and drank my usual amount during the ride. Sometimes these things just happen, but I do tend to "slightly bonk" when I'm dieting, but never as hard as today. I had to do the last 2 miles at little more than walking pace whilst concentrating on not being sick!

Until you've "bonked" you can't even begin to claim you're a cyclist, beit a good one ore a sh1t one.

As a diabetic I can bonk before I even get on a bike

After you have burnt up all the glucose in your system from the food you have just eaten "they" say you can ride on average for about a further 90 minutes before you have used up the glycogen stored in your liver and muscles, then you will bonk.

I find that can also bonk between the two activities, ie between using up your glucose (or the time it takes for the food to get in your system, depending on the speed of the carbs) and before your liver has time to flood your system with the stored gylcogen.

So it is not only important to eat the right amount/type of carbs but more importantly at the right time, like people say drink before you're thirsty BUT eat before you've used all your energy!

Went out for a tentative 25 miler today, and felt fine. Took most of yesterday to fully recover though. I know it's a diet thing - I am on a low carb diet, and so 50 hilly miles is about my limit whilst on the diet.

When I wasn't dieting, my endurance was significantly better, so it's true that "you are what you eat"!

I've messed up my feeding / drinking twice so far.

The first time I bonked I thought I was dying, I just lost all strength and ended up leaning against a wall with my left shoulder.

It was right here: in Alkmonton right where the car is parked.

The second time was cycling back into Tutbury, I only had a mile to go and I felt like I'd hit a wall of treacle. I was down to bare walking pace and had to sit by my car for 10 minutes before the stars went and I could see properly.

I think this is why I tend to overdo things a bit nowadays. (with food and drink)

Happened to me earlier this year, riding from Limoges Airport to Felletin in France, about 72 miles and very up and down. Thought I had drunk and eaten OK but about three or four kilometres from desination just completely ran out of steam, a small rise just finished me off. I ended up sitting on the side of the road for twenty minutes or so until I recovered, I rode into the town and went to the local Huit au 8 and demolished a pack of fig rolls and a yazoo milkshake. It truly was a revolting feeling.

I used to bonk after the end of the ride.. had a horrible habit of nailing it on the way home and was sick a fair few times before I kicked that habit!

Never bonked properly mid-ride though (as in had to stop and sit for 20 mins as above).

The worst I've had the "bonk" was not suprisingly on one of my first few rides. It was so bad it took over an hour to drag my sorry @rse the last three miles. :(
