Power Meter Hub or Crank system?

Postby claret73 » Sat Oct 06, 2012 21:29 pm

I've done some more thinking on this & I'm almost certain prices could work out similar or maybe the hub route a little more expensive. I'm looking to get a meter for my winter bike. Looking at either PowerTap or Quaq crank based. Currenty Sq Taper BB (Yes it's old Ultegra kit). I've a feeling my race bike might be BB30, so if I upgraded the winter bike to a GXP BB, I'd need an adaptor for the BB30 to use them on the race bike. Good idea or not? Any downsides to this?

Having a PowerTap on a training wheel, I'd be stuck with that except buying another hub to use on either a lighter rim or deep section etc. I can see that getting out of hand as not one set of wheels suits all conditions. I might do club TT's for example...

I'm favouring the Crank system but I don't know anything about the BB30 adaptors & their drawbacks or not?

I agree and one of the main reasons I went for a crank based system.

I don't think a BB30 adaptor will be any problem. My bike has a BB30 compatible bottom bracket but I run Shimano Hollowtech II with an appropriate adaptor. Not had any problems, creaks etc over the last couple of years of hard use.

Thanks! Good to know there's not any mechanical stuff to worry about with the adaptors. Out of interest which crank system are you using?...I'm drawn to the Quarq on price, yet do not use any SRAM stuff at the moment...
