New summer bike for 2013

Postby jonnybgood » Wed Oct 03, 2012 19:03 pm

Hi guys
First post,so hear goes it!
I have a budget of between £5-6.5k for new road bike next spring, had the usual advice from cycling pals,LBS,
would very much like third opinion!
Its great having the budget, but no experience of riding suggested bikes.

Nice budget, suppose it will all depend on what style of riding you want to do and then your current ability.

Then you'll ignore it all and go for what looks best.

Good luck, when you get it make sure you post some pics in the 'show us yours' forum

You are probably on the button there Wobblehead!
But for the record,40 years old, cycling at first to get some sort of fitness back!
After 5 years, body shape changed quite a bit,and riding 2-3 times a week with the odd sportive thrown in!

Do you ride at present, if so, what?

What distances are you covering?

What's important, speed, comfort, lightness, stiffness, colour........

PS I've a second hand Ridley orion 2007, well used and looked after, if you push me hard you can have it for £6K

Nice one!
Riding Condor Leggero at moment.
Each year getting a little bit fitter, better and lighter!
Comfortable 80mile+ any terrain,as requirements go not sure really!
Stiffness and quality,comfort probably.

I'm biased having just got a S-works Venge that would fit straight into that budget but one of the things that stood out was the ability to do back to back rides on tarmac and Venge's at my local Concept Store.

Hi, like you I decided to splash out about 2 yrs ago, similar budget & a desire to get something special. I couldn't look beyond the Colnago C59. I wasn't able to test ride the bike and had to wait 4 months to take delivery but it was worth the wait. It is a fantastic bike and I like nothing more than taking it out for the weekend ride. Enjoy the experience and good luck.

Obviously at this price point you have quite a few options ! Few questions to ask yourself.

Do you want stock geometry or made to measure ? (Parlee Z5 or Parlee Z1 ?)
Is it an out and out race bike, or more laid back geometry. (Madone or Damone ?)
Is it primarily for speed (more aero) or climbing (lighter the better) (Venge or SL4 ?)
Do you want to go electric or manual (EPS/Di2 or Super Record/DA 9000 ?)
Do you want to buy a bike you can wheel out of the showroom or do you want to spec each part. Personally at this price point I tend to buy the frame and then build up to my preference.

Enjoy choosing !

Thanks guys for the advice!
Going to look at Venge as I have concept store nearby, really fancy Colnago and Mccaria I think you have nailed it,think I want to spec each part as each bike I've had has been a so called hand me down, don't get me wrong enjoyed each bike as they are 100 times better than we rode as teens!
Just to throw another hat in the ring Ciocc Devilry???

Buying a frame & selecting each part is the right way to go. More choice & decisions involved but ultimately you get everything you want.

I'd give Canyon some consideration as well.

You going Mechanical or Electronic?

I would advise colnago c59 with campag eps super record.

Only on the basis that I suspect you've already made your mind up - just colour scheme to sort out!!

If I had the money to spend on a bike I'd find it hard not to have given this option a try - but not without a test ride.

Try one out jonnybgood, C59s are pretty easy to get test rides on. I know you'll go for it after trying it anyway, but you have to feel that great great frame ...

I would get a Storck if I had a similar shopping trip in mind, or maybe a Viner.
