...can't get the bloomin' axle out!

Postby stevesimmonds » Mon Oct 08, 2012 12:49 pm

I'm pretty sure my rear drive side bearings are on the way out as is a bit of movement even once tightened, so i thought i'll replace them, easy job! Well it would be if i could get the bloomin' axle out! I've got a shimano freehub with a 130mm axle, which means the inner lock nut on the drive side is inside the open end of the freehub, which means you can't get a spanner on it (ridiculous design). I found a tutorial on removing this, it said to tap it through with a copper mallet to gain access to the nut. I've tried hitting it as hard as i dare and no movement whatsoever, anyone got any tips on getting this out?

if it's a typical shimano cup and cone hub, you undo the non-drive side and the axle just drops out

No, its a Sealed Cartridge bearing hub (actually made a mistake there its a 'Formula' freehub with Shimano Compatible Spline/Shimano cassette). I'm suspecting it's the tightness of the bearings on the axle that's causing the problem.

hit it harder.

but be aware the bearing is most likey need removing from the axel to be able to withdraw the axel out from the ND side.
