2013 Objectives

Postby Duncanandthemachine » Mon Oct 08, 2012 11:58 am

Just in the process of finalising my objectives for next year, what are you folks thinking about aiming for in 2013?

Why not a round figure of 24, or better 25 mph

24mph is my "soft" target  (but I reckon 23.75 is more doable!)

To improve FTP by end of Jan 2013 by 5% from my current level, which may mean more of a % increase when I retest this December.

To drop 5kg in weight during Jan 2013 to improve PWR.

To this end , I will be starting a 'Lose 5kg' club

Other targets, don't know as race calendars will be a while to set.

I've been seriously ill this year and as a result have been off the bike since July.

My primary objective for 2013 is to return to good health and get back on my bike.

Once I've got used to riding again, I'd like to do some longer rides at a higher average speed than I have been capable of for the past few years.

I have specific goals, but they can wait until I have got a few thousand miles in.

Just a small few for 2013. Nothing too great but I'm sure the list will grow as the year goes on.

At the very least:
- Stop being embarrassed of my abilities/kit and join the local club
- Get my licence and start racing locally
- Complete a London to Paris for charity
- Drop 5kg

- Improve FTP by 10% by the start of the summer (June)
- Win 1 or more 3/4 circuit races and move to Cat 3. Get top 10 placed in other 3/4 races.
- Enter 1 or more 3/4 road races
- Loose 10kg to improve power / weight (by April)
- Cut down on alcohol consumption.

I've been thinking about these for a few few weeks now

Get to 1st cat
Win a 2/3 road race, had a 2nd and 4th in the last few of the season
20.xx on club 10 - sub 20 on fast course
Do a quick 25 (not done one yet so not sure on this one yet)
Get to 75kg from 79 or so
Up FTP 5-10% (optimistic maybe)
Sub 48 round Richmond Park for 3 laps / sub 15 for one

Depending on how all that goes I may be able to look at the club tt records in a more serious light, as they're totally miles away at the minute thanks to Tarmac-expert putting in a sterling effort this year improving on all of his times and holding nearly every record now.

Hmmm ..

Train a minimum of 5hrs a week over the winter.
Join local club and compete in club races.
I want to improve my performance on the flat, I'd like to get my FTP near the 250W mark.
Perhaps get a shiny new bike, and learn to ride with aerobars.
All the above is just advice .. you can do whatever the f*ck you wana do!

In order:

Score some E12 points
Get 25 points to stay a Cat 2
Win an E12 race
Win an E12 race at Castle Combe
Get some points in a road race
Get to 1st Cat

I think my second season of racing is going to be considerably harder than my first. :D

I think you need more, by winning an e12 race you'll get the 25 pts, and score e12 points all in one, and if you do it at Combe that's pretty much all of your goals done in one race!

Good luck though, I haven't put down winning an e12 (it will be my 2nd season too) as I think the jump in talent is probably very large and although I should win a 2/3 I can't see that happening with an e12 road field.

I'm going to start the year with some winter series races which I think are Regional C+ and only worth 10 points for a win. I found the 3/4 races pretty easy this year (I'm sorry, I can't help it!) once I got the hang of things but from the one E12 race I did I know it's a completely different world racing against the Elites.

If I can stay a Cat 2 I'll be happy, but I like setting myself really tough goals and then pushing as hard as I can. I think I like all the long winter rides and intervals almost as much as the racing!

Good luck with your own season. I think a win in a 2/3 will race will be a pretty awesome achievement in itself. :D

I think also the gap between 3/4 and having 2nds in the mix is huge too. There is a massive span of talent in 2nd cat, you'll find people who score 100-150 pts each year that are 2nd cat, and you'll find people who just about scrape the 25 to keep it each year. Its quite an interesting category for that. My only experience of racing with the elites was on a flat course, so although there were many conti pro's racing it wasn't too hard to stick with the bunch, but being in the winning break I'm sure was a world apart.

Thanks, yes the win on a 2/3 was one of my goals this season, and I was so close to doing it a couple of races back but had to settle for 2nd, quite annoying really, but I had to remind myself it was only the first season so really next year should be good.
