For most riders 50mm is normally the right balance of stiffness, aerodynamics without too much hassle in crosswinds. If you're wanting to do really well in the time trials then 60mm+ might be better but either is ok. If you are getting carbon wheels for racing I would definitely look at getting tubs though.

Hi - just wondering why you are so convinced that tubs are the better choice over clinchers?

Pretty sure carbon tubs are cheaper than carbon clinchers, as well as lighter.

And although there are tradeoffs that mean it's not really suitable for everyday riding, it may well be worth the effort if you are just getting them out for races?

Plus he did only say look at tubs - possibly because the OP mentioned 60mm clinchers ;)

Thanks for that. I was only asking as I considering tubs myself and was wondering if the ride was that much better. I know alot of people swear by them and would suggest that the extra hassle was worth it.

Te real question is whether such deep wheels are better FOR YOU than conventional alloy lower profile wheels. If the answer is yes, then tubulars are the better choice

As others have said if you're looking at deep carbon wheels it's well worth asking yourself if tubs are worth it.

Planet X demonstrate the weight differences quite nicely as their 50mm tubs are 1425g the pair but the 52mm clinchers are 1800g. Even looking at the Zipp 303 Firecrest, tubs are 1250g a pair, clinchers 1475g. Personally if I'm spending that much on a wheel set I'm not going to compromise.

Back to your original question I'd second 50mm rims as your best option. Shallower and you start to lose the aero benefits pretty quickly (on a standard V profile), deeper and you are handling in a crosswind for small benefits. You also tend to add a lot of weight if you go deeper than 50mm on a generic asian rim.
