9 speed groupset with 10 speed mech

Postby torin » Fri Nov 09, 2012 15:36 pm

Sorry if this question has already been asked but I couldn't find anything.
Basically, I broke a tiagra nine speed mech, and was wandering if a 10 speed shimano mech would work with a tiagra 9 groupset. Was wandering about cable pull and chain width, any help is really appreciated.

The rear mech will work absolutely fine with no issues.
You may have problems with the front mech because the 10spd mech will normally have a slightly narrower cage than the 9spd (10spd chain is narrower than 9spd you see...)

***The following applies only to double front mechs.***
However if the 10spd front mech is one of the new ones (i.e. fd-4700, fd-5700 etc) then this is slightly wider cage than previous 10spd (fd-5600 etc) to cope with the slightly wider gap between the chain-rings in the new cranksets.

***Triple front-mech will work fine. I have previously used a 10spd triple front mech (fd-5600) with otherwise 9spd tiagra groupset for about 2 years without any issues.

cable pull is dictated by STi lever not the mech so you will be fine

Cable pull for the left sti is different b/w 9spd and 10spd double. That's why getting the front to work consistently may be an issue.
Cable pull of the right sti is the same.

Rear will work fine.
Front may work. But may not shift consistently all the time, especially under load.

as long as the rear mech is not MTB Dyna sys 10 speed.
