Campag 11 speed chainset & 9 speed chain

Postby Daithi » Sat Nov 10, 2012 11:06 am

Has anyone tried running a Campag 11 speed chainset with a 10 or 9 speed setup? I want to get an ultra torque compact chainset in silver & there are few 11 speed options out there but I run a 9 speed on group on the bike I want to fit it to. I've had no problem mixing up 10 speed chain rings with 9 speed chains in the past but wondered if mixing with 11 speed would be a step to far.

Of course all my problems would be solved if Campagnolo started making nice shiny 10 speed silver components again, what is it with all the nasty black painted parts these days, even on Record?! I think only Athena comes in silver now & I'm not ready to make the wholesale shift to 11 speed just yet.

I am pretty sure it will be fine with 10 speed, 9 speed chain is a bit wider, but generally speaking chain sets are interchangeable, even between shimano and campag, if you are not too fussy

Black components are awful

I used to run an 11 speed chorus chainset with nine speed Ultegra and it works fine.

all 11 speed campag now

I think it should be OK - but to check, look at the technical docs on the campag website. I'm not sure which doc/manual you should look for but one will have a very detailed profile schematic of the chainset with the distances between rings etc. The archive should have something similar for the 9 speed too, so you'll be able to compare them.

Your only issue is likely to be a little more transmission noise and chainring rub i.e. small chainring to small sprocket - there's no physical reason why the two won't work but because the rollers on the 9 speed chain are 6.3mm wide and the 11 speed are 5.5mm.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

Thanks for the advice, good to know I have an option with the 11-speed chainsets now.
