Techie Row. How to pronounce GUID

Postby Kieran_Burns » Wed Nov 14, 2012 09:45 am

Is it goo-id or GWID? or even G.U.I.D.

Things are getting heated here.

We use GUIs quite a lot over here and everyone calls them number 1 - goo-id.

In our part of your world we say "gee yew eye dee - you know, a global properly unique number identifier thing. Did you watch the cricket?". That's the correct pronunciation.

Gee you aye dee.
You only need two tools: WD40 and Duck Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the tape.

Gwid. Like "quid". But UUID is "yoo yoo eye dee". =)

Also interesting are .exe and .ini. I say "dot exy" and "dot inny", but some people say "dot ee eks ee" and "dot eye en eye".

/me is suspicious of anything used as a unique ID which is only "probably" unique
/me is doubly suspicious of anyone using auto-generated GUIDs for primary keys

20 years of Unix admin and everyone I've talked to about it says "g-u-i-d". Although the uid bit is almost like a word.

So it's "g" tiny pause "u-i-d", with the uid bit sounding a bit like

I'd say goo-id for GUID but then i despair when people say 'sequel' rather than S.Q.L.

Inconsistency FTW.
