Help getting old bike apart

Postby Bwgan » Sat Nov 17, 2012 22:11 pm

Hi there,

I have bought an old steel framed bike, majority of it is useless, just wanted the frame. I cannot get the crank or crank arm off. The nuts holding them on have been removed, loads of WD40 have been applied over a few days. I have smashed the cr@p out of it with hammer and chisel. I did want to keep it ideally. Also, the forks are stuck to the stem, I've undone everything, taken the long bolt out of the stem, undone headset, sprayed loads of WD40 again, smashed the crap out of it again and nothing budges?!?

HELP!!!!!

Just heated the top of the forks up with my butane torch for a few mins before beating the cr@p put of the stem again

read parktools.

cranks you need a crank puller.

headset depending what it is undo both nuts. the lock nut then the spacer then the other nut.

If you've tried and failed with a crank-puller, then a fork-type ball joint splitter should work for the cranks. Not sure that beating the stem with a hammer will aid matters? Try some ACF50 or PlusGas down the steerer rather than WD40 with some twisting to try and release?
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

for the stem problem, try a length of metal tubing roughly the same diameter as the stem & insert from the bottom of the fork . Then knock the tube with a hammer to push the stem out after plenty of wd40 or similar.
The trick is not to have the tube too small though otherwise it will go into the stem and make the problem worse!
