Stripping Tiagra brakes

Postby Will Nunez » Tue Nov 20, 2012 13:35 pm

This might be a muppet of a question but........

Ive got tiagra dual pivot brakethat has seized. Ie i pull lever and it doesnt spring back.

So Ive stripped it, cleaned it and lubed it, reassembled it. And it seems to me its critical to get the tightness right on the pivot and the fixing bolt. The shimno techdoc dont coer this and bizarelly enough even Sheldon Brown doesnt go into depth on Dual Pivot brke stripping. A quick google and I cant seem to find anything other than videos of strippers on push bikes.

can anyone give me practical advice on how best to reassemble such that tension is light enough to ensure movement but not loose enough to work loose and fall off? Or am i best just buying a new brake set. Seems a waste when its working

I did that to my 105 brakes last week and I basically undid the bolt enough so that it moved freely and then tightened it until there was resistance, backed off a bit and then tightened the bolt on the back.

Seems to work - and it feels right in the same way as adjusting a hub.
I'm left handed, if that matters.

When my Tiagra back brake stops springing back I douse it with GT85 or WD40 and it comes back to life. Never taken it to bits; I tried once and noticed that the bolt was extremely tight and left it.
