written off rims?

Postby ilovedirt » Thu Nov 22, 2012 19:07 pm

I don't have any photos because i'm not sure i'll be able to get decent ones, but i was wondering if somebody could shed some light on something. I've just had the wheels off my downhill bike for a bit of a strip and service, and on closer inspection, the rear rim seems to be coming apart at the join (alex supra D rim), there's probably about a 1mm gap at the edges and extends at least half the way down the wall. The front isn't much better either (superstar DH rim). I'm not too surprised about the rear one as i did a couple of half runs down antur stiniog with a flat the other day, but i've only had the front one a year or so and wouldn't say I've given it a major hammering, whilst the superstar rear one i've had for longer is fine...
Anyone reckon these are safe to ride or will need replacing? I'll probably just lace them up to a couple of superstar DH rims again if they're knackered.

What's the worst that can happen? Not much I'd say.

Erm, could probably end up folding them in half if i hit something a bit hard in the wrong place, it's a helluva weak spot I'm guessing.

Looks like you've made your mind up then. Chances are if you hit something hard enough to total them like that then a set without the problem would have done similar.

I dunno, maybe... I'm not too surprised about the rear, but the front isn't that old and hasn't had that tough a life really...

Was the gap there when new. Some are internally pinned not all rims are welded with clean joins

Don't think so - I have another SS DH595 rim laced to a rear hub and there's no gap on that.

I've dropped SS an email about it anyway, if it is knackered then it should be under warranty as it's only a year and a bit old.

Aye, I'm gonna get some photos for the SS fella, so i'll take a couple and put them up here - was kinda hoping for some input from SS, nicklouse or some folks who know about wheel building... I can true a wheel but don't know much more than that.

Sounds like the rim has been "spread" sideways at the tyre bead. But then I'd expect you'd see a fair bit of obvious damage to go with that.

Otherwise, I'm a bit clueless - keep us posted on what SS say.

SS will probably say it is normal wear and tear.

if it happened without you using the bike, then it is pretty much manufacturing fault.
