Shimano R500 rear wheel spoke length can't be serious

Postby Herbsman » Sun Dec 09, 2012 14:49 pm

http://techdocs.shimano.com/media/techd ... 726373.pdf

Can't find my tape measure. Need a new spoke. Wheel is unrideable. Can't go to LBS due to work shift pattern.

According to Shimano's techdocs the spokes are 286mm. All of them.

No indication of different lengths for drive side / non drive side.

Is this some sort of joke?

Surely the non drive side spokes should be longer than the drive side spokes.

I've just roughly measured mine in a dark shed with a torch...I had 280 ish elbow to the rim, plus whatever was inside, BOTH sides. The hub flanges measure the same both sides as well, so it does appear to be right.

If the hub has assymetric flanges i.e. larger on NDS, then equal length spokes each side is not unusual - they're designed that way.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

Yeah, I thought of that at the time - but the hub flanges and the rim are symmetrical.

http://velospec.com/components/shimano/whr500
No.of Spokes: F:20, R:24
Length: F:278mm, R:286/288mm

That likely to be correct ?
However other bits of googling then indicates both sides are 286mm

Wonder if the 2 sides are laced differently ?

I've had shimano wheel before and did have a little bit of trouble finding a correct spoke from stock. In the end I had to order online...

Sounds about right from memory.
