Help with Shimano Road Shoes size/fit!

Postby dkoor » Sun Dec 30, 2012 12:24 pm

Hello gals and guys. :)

Recently I've asked here for help about purchasing my first road bike, now that I've done it I need your help with some road accessories. Namely - shoes.

I'll go for Shimano PD-5700 SPD/SL (105) pedals and I need a nice shoes that will go well with those.

Specifically I was thinking about Shimano R077 road shoes, but since I have 0 (zero) experience about road shoes fit/size in general, I need your advice.

My left foot (bigger foot) is 281mm and I am unsure which Shimano road size to order.

I think size 45.5 (288mm) would be ok for me, but what do you more experienced people say? 8)

Thanks for reading!

I was told to go one size bigger in the same shoe which I did. I'm a 9 (43) but that was too tight but the 44 was fine

You really need to try these on in a shop, I'd never buy shoes or clothing mail order.

I have those shoes and they're fine on a nice day but the mesh tops offer no rain protection and are freezing in winter, so you'll need summer and winter overshoes.

SPD-SL pedals are fine for a dedicated road bike, but for a commuter I find SPDs far easier in traffic.

Living in the middle of nowhere have some advantages but buying equipment is not one of them
Seriously I'd probably have to travel some 100-200km to try some Shimano, and I would call it quite a luck to find this exact model or similar. Already tried in some shop 50km away but they didn't have my size... it was 43 and it looked like something I couldn't put my foot in (too small, really). :o
I wouldn't bother someone to help me if I could do this. :(

What size are yours mate?
And what is the size of your foot?

It is the next best test (aside from trying them in 1st person) that will help :)

And apart from having to have overshoes with those, are you satisfied with them?

Thanks for your input. 8)

That is the exact setup I've just gone for. I was a bit panicky about going up a size like the recommendation but I'm really glad I did. I'm size 9 in everything and all my other cycling shoes have been a 43 including a pair of shimano mtb shoes, I bought the ro77's in a 44 and they are perfect. Lovely and comfy, not even that lethal to walk in.

I'm a UK size 10 and went for 11.5's Shimano's R087's. I wanted mine to be roomy enough to allow thick winter socks.

Guys thanks for your input.

Considering all this, I will go either for size UK 10 or 10.5.
I normally take UK 9.5.

I take UK size 9 1/2 shoes and I have a pair of EU size 44 R087s that fit me well. My feet are quite narrow - I don't know if that makes a material difference.

The obvious solution would be to order a few different sized pairs and then return the ones you dont want.

Just go up one euro size, so I assume you'd be 44 normally, then a 45 should be spot on.

OK, thanks. I will do that. 8)

I take New Balance and Adidas:
EUR 44.5
UK 10
US 10.5
285mm
...and they fit me perfectly. I've used those brands for running for a few years now.
Also I've just checked some Nike and Umbro (indoor soccer) and those are all size 44.5 EUR, a perfect fit for me.

Shimano chart is slightly different as they "value" 285mm as size UK 9.5 and US 10.5

Anyhow all that means (NB/Adidas) size EUR 44.5 + 1 = size 45.5 Shimano.

BTW after all this I hope some guys who are after Shimano road shoes can benefit from this thread as well. 8)

Gosh, I just googled two pages about Shimano shoes...
Here;
search.php?keywords=shimano+shoes&terms=all&author=&fid%5B%5D=40042&sc=1&sf=titleonly&sr=posts&sk=t&sd=d&st=0&ch=300&t=0&submit=Search

Seems that I probably shouldn't have opened this thread at the first place considering actual info on these pages.

So thank you all again for tolerating & helping me 8)

Just to make a closure to this, and eventually help someone:

I bought Shimano R087 in size EUR 45 (normal, not wide - I have slightly narrower foot) and they fit perfectly.
They ship cleats with them so you don't have to buy those separately.

Now I only curse bad weather that I can't ride more.
