Newbie, gear change clicking noise

Postby p1tse » Sat Jan 05, 2013 23:09 pm

Have a new bike and on some gears the chain makes a clicking noise like it doesn't change up down properly

Not sure what the technical term is for this, but what needs to be done to sort this out?

It only happens at times on certain gears, but if I try shifting again it sometimes rectifies itself

Have you had the bike serviced since buying it? The cables on a new bike stretch initially and need to be adjusted after about 6 weeks

Yeah probably cable tension. First thing to try is to give the barrel adjuster on the back of the rear mech a quarter-half turn (anti-clockwise).

Thanks
Completely new to cycling and trying to get fit at the same time

Not had the 6 weeks service as picked it up just before Xmas

Is that anti clockwise in the facing direction of the arrow?

Yes, anti-clockwise if you're looking at the back of the mech.

Thanks
Gave it about quarter of a turn or maybe less but not much improvement

Will just let the 6 week service to fix

Should all gears be seemless, smooth, no noise ie clicking, struggling to change gear sticking noise?
Nothing to compare to versus a young kids mountain bike lol

I'd maybe go up to one full turn (in quarter turn increments) and if it's not having any effect then leave if for the service.

Yes if the groupset is reasonable quality and everything's set-up properly it should shift crisply and not make any noise when in gear.
