Please help!

Postby Barrzy257 » Mon Jan 07, 2013 14:08 pm

Trying to remove my sram rival crank, now on my previous double it was the normal 8mm hex inside the larger retaining bolt you undone and hey presto the arm is off, but on this crank (which I bought off eBay) there is no larger bolt? It's just an 8mm hex straight into the spindle. I have fitted the crank but now need to remove it, when I remove the bolt the crank is just as right as it was with the bolt in! It looks to me like there may be an extractor needed, as there is a larger thread there which seems not in use. It definitely is a different arm to the normal rival one as I have that on another bike.
Here's pictures to explain

Please help! As I need to get this done today really... Cheers

Looks like the self extracting nut bit is just missing. AFAIK they work the same as all the other GXP cranks

I did think this, but when I took my sram force crank arm off to compare, where the self extracting bolt should be the whole sizes are different diameters?

The bolt looks like a powerspline bolt, but the crank can't be one of them as I'm using with GXP bb? I've tried park tool CCP-22 to no avail! Any more help?

Surely the left hand crank arm fitment is the same no matter which BB you have with the inner 8mm undoing against the 10mm head hex head?

That's my problem, there is 10mm only the 8mm bolt straight into the spindle.

I did try a park tool ccp22 but that never worked either!

No, just the hollow spindle. Here a picture of the bolt taken out. http://www.flickr.com/x/t/0094009/photo ... 357024507/

Emailed the previous owner and he reckons once the bolt is out the arm should just come off, but even if I give it a wack it still won't?! The BB is what I'm replacing so not worried about damaging it, but it's a carbon frame so don't want to transfer the force though it...

could it be that both bolts went missing and they then decided to replace it with a 10mm outer? Just guessing but it definitely looks like there is the two types of thread in there for the two bolts that is meant to be there

Think this could be the answer, must just be seized on? Even though I did pack it with grease on install

The picture on your Flickr feed of the chain set has the self extracting bolt in place. The 10mm retaining bolt needs to be firmly in place so that 8mm can push against it when your loosening it. It's a nightmare to sort!

Unfortunately that's not the one I'm trying to remove, it's the first 2 ones with the close ups I'm having the problem with.
I think it's the wrong bolt but the 10 and 8mm bolts have been replaced by the single. My problem now is, with no extractor bolt present, how the hell can I remove the arm off the spindle?! It's as if its press fitted

This. Should be an 8mm hex head accessed through a shallow thread 10mm hex head. Undoing the 8mm pushes against the 10mm outer forcing the crank arm off. Suspect the original hex bolts have been lost and bodied with your set up.

you could buy new bolts...http://www.amazon.co.uk/SRAM-BB-Bolt-Le ... B002I7O5O0

as above put them both on and then use the 8mm to push against the 10mm.

I couldn't find that anywhere!! But I still don't think that one would fit, the outer thread is 22mm so I ordered the truvativ one. http://www.play.com/Sports-Outdoors/Spo ... d:39781478
I no there's 2 but the threads seem spot on?
