tubular tyre valve confusion

Postby gaffy » Sun Jan 20, 2013 23:59 pm

hi

though this would be best explained using a photo:

Image

this is my tubular tyre - a vittoria corsa

im pretty sure the core/something has been removed from the valve??

who can identify what is missing and what i need, a link to somewhere selling the part would be amazing if thats even possible :s

i have a feeling there are two bits missing? i removed the valve core from a normal presta inner tube but it didnt fit..?

or are there different/specific types

thanks everyone!?? hope someone can help

It's hard to tell from your picture. Is the end of that thing threaded?

either you need a valve core (and/or an extension) but possibly, from the looks of things, you might have just snapped off the presta pin. End on photo pls?

You should be able to unscrew the valve core and replace - the threaded pin and locknut appears to have snapped-off. There should be two flats on the end of the valve - use pliers or small adjustable spanner to unscrew.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

the valve pictures is threaded on the inside and not on the outsdie (its just 3 engraved bands on the outside)

theres literally nothing inside apart from a hole...

i dont think i need an extension, only if the valve stops short of a dip rim.

must just be a valve core missing :S

are there different types anyone got a link to one

i tried to install one of another tube and it didnt seem to fit :S

thanks so far!

If you expand the pic on planet x site, you ll see you need the valve core, so unless that is snapped off inside the valve stem, then one should just screw in - i dont know if there are different threads for these, i would go to a LBS and they r bound to have 100s lying around.
the valve stem isnt removeable like the 320tpi vitt tubs.

if its been damaged and you cant just pop some new cores in, then Vitorria valve stems complete come off at the very bottom and can be replaced with new stems/valves like this:

no they dont...as i said only on the top end Vitt tubs, and the CR is a cheap training tire.
tbh you'd just be better of binning it and buying a new one than faff around.

Not sure it's a cheap training tyre. Probably just the older 290tpi version that don't have the removable red stem. If you can't get a valve core in there then I don't think there's much you can do.

i have two which would make over £50 worth of tubular tyre. rather not bing them tbh.

thanks for the help everyone.

so basically i need to enquire as to whether a valve core would do the job if not see if extensions would work if not bin :(

Looks about right. If that won't hold a valve core then you'll struggle to get a valve extender in there either. The only options with extenders are to screw in internally in place of the core, or externally but you don't have a thread on the outside....
