rear mech hanger needing re-tapped

Postby lmk1 » Sat Feb 02, 2013 22:49 pm

looking for some helpful advice. i bought an old peugeot steel frame which is turning rapidly into a labour of love! i am having big problems fitting the rear mech and the treads are clogged/ worn on the hanger. Being an old steel frame the hanger can't be easily replaced. Does anyone know if i can get the hanger re-tapped and even better if there is anyone in the vacinity of central scotland who could do this.
Thanks in advance.

Just get a 10mm tap, take it steady and you'll be okay.

Any decent motorfactors or light engineers should be able to Helicoil it for you. I had a steel On One frame that needed doing a couple of times, I think the coil you need is M10 25pitch.

In the end I found the better soloution was a piece of kit my LBS had from Kinesis, It was like a giant chain ring bolt which pushed through from the rearside of the mech hanger and stopped with a flange, then you could just thread the mech onto it.

I take it your frame hasnt got a replaceable mech hanger?

DON'T use a standard M10 tap; rear mechs use M10x1 screws, which is pretty unusual.

Usually the threads can be cleared by inserting the tap from the opposite side of the hanger.

Onbike1939 thank you for a very generous offer however i live in lanark some way from fife. i shall however endeavour to tap it from rear. i ordered a tap online yesterday and given one of the posts about not being a 10mm i'm a little wary however if it doesn't work i'll try framer saver suggestion however nothing came up on ebay but will try again. thanks again everyone.
