should i train with a cold

Postby limoneboy » Sat Feb 02, 2013 22:25 pm

i have been many indoor training over the last month due to the weather but went out today due to the rare sunshine and lack of rain, issue was i have cold and this was one of the hardest sessions i have had in 4 years legs fine but breathing hard.

my question is , is it safe to train when you have a cold ? or should i stick to the turbo indoors , it was 2 degrees today so that could be a factor.

Of course it's safe. I've heard they're quite good at treating pneumonia these days.
Is the gorilla tired yet?

Yes it is safe & recommended as OK to train with a Cold. Its not going to make much difference to your body if your training inside on the turbo or outside as assuming its not warm out you would be wearing sensible clothing.

I know its a Triathlon page but it does give some sound advice - http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/a ... icleid=395
Pain hurts much less if its topped off with beating your mates to top of a climb.

No I wouldn't train with a cold - at least not at the start of one, and definitley not if I had a raised temperature. But then I had pericarditis(inflammation of the heart sac) 15 years ago after training with an infection in my body. Felt as if I was going to die - literally. COuldn't get up stairs etc. So no - don't chance it - a normal cold doesn't last more than a week. Clean your bike, watch your diet, sleep well.

I remember going out with man flu once on a fast group ride. I was fine for 40 miles then suddenly felt absolutely disgusting and couldn't get above 12mph on the flat...I limped home and got off and walked up some piddly hill and honestly felt like I was about to die.

Since then I always take a couple of days to a week off when I am ill. Its just not worth it.
