Another KOM video - somewhere cool (North Wales!)

Postby deadhead1971 » Sun Feb 17, 2013 01:00 am

Seeing that nice KOM video in a recent thread made me think of this video I shot whilst on an evening ride last May. I was amazed to discover that I'd got the KOM, as I hadn't even been aware there was a segment there!
Anyone who rode the first Etape Cymru in 2011 may remember this section, though it was so windy we had to pedal to go downhill!

Enjoy the vid, and I hope it inspires people to come to beautiful North Wales :-)

Nice, was the constant side to side rocking you sprinting in the drops?

I had the gopro mounted on the bar with one of those k-edge mounts, so yes, if you start to climb out of the saddle you do get that rocking side to side motion. Mounting the camera on the helmet helps to smooth that out a lot, obviously, but if you're not used to it, the extra weight is uncomfortable. Oh and it looks daft too!

Nice video and "interesting" road surface. I liked the music too.

I know that road but from the opposit direction and it's a brute of a climb up to the cattle grid. Takes a brave man to go flying down that descent at that speed, kudos.

Really glad you like his music. John is actually my best mate, and we've been making music together on and off for about 25 years, believe it or not. Drop him a line if you like his stuff, it would mean a lot to him.

Cheers, I'll have to mentally recalibrate my sense of risk assessment now!
I'd love to try that route the other way round, I am a sucker for hills.

great vid, shame about the split screen for the last half, surprised at the segment average tho' a downhilland profile like that looks like it should be a lot faster than 20.4mph? must be a lot twistier than it looks on screen?

The segment actually stops short of the cattle grid, just before it goes split screen. If it included that lower section, I expect the average would be a fair bit higher.
I also wanted to do my mate a favour and promote his music. Hope that explains it :-)

Will check the vid out when I get home. Is this the other side of the horseshoe pass?

Yes, not too far from there.

The arrow on this map marks the start of the descent (which goes south). You can see the Horseshoe Pass in the top right.
