Got a general MTB question that doesn't fit anywhere else? Here's the place.

Should MTBs be called ATBs?

Postby FocusZing » Tue Feb 19, 2013 21:20 pm

Mountain Biking! I don't see any when I have walked up mountains.

All Terrain Bike is a much more accurate description.

'All' though? How about just off road bikes?

That would work, more descriptive. I guess Most Terrain Bikes might get around any terrains which would make the description invalid. Lava flow, freshly laid concrete, ice...I'm sure there are others.

ATB were what they were called back in the day. an MTB is not an ATB.

Bikes are for pedalling though, he's just sitting on a bike letting gravity do it's thing. If he rode up I'd take your point.

He could do it on one of these, uncomfortable granted.

I do remember seeing them described as ATB when they mainly used Reynolds tubing.

How do you think they get up there? Levitate? Granted you'd be pushing a fair bit of the way however I see you for the troll you and so am leaving you to this thread.

I'm not trolling, I would go to Crud for that. Mountain Biking is not a good description of the genre of cycling.

Quite right, absolutely shocking misuse of language. Once again I suggest a strongly worded letter to the Daily Mail.

A fair point, it's bit pedantic.

Road bikes used to be called racing bikes.

Ha, I'm no Tommy Godwin. I need a bit of a rest to consider the complexities of cycling.

If you're not trolling then you're an idiot. I've ridden snowdon, and it's more than just letting gravity do the work. For starters, you can ride up about 80% of it on the right bike. Are you one of those lycra clad XC ladies that gets all butthurt when they see a downhiller getting a lift up the hill and still call it mountain biking?

I have walked up Snowdon three times I did not see one MTB. Ride up 80% of it? Towards the top the wind would blow you to your death (on the wrong day). If any do, it would be just to say they had, you could walk up faster.

No, they are used on roads, trails and hills. I have nothing against Down Hill MTBs, it looks like fun. The reference to the Dandy Horse was not a snub, just the origin of the bike.

I do idiotic things most days, no question.
