Mr Stinks

Postby DCR00 » Sun Jan 27, 2013 20:40 pm

Evening all

I was going to put this off until we have moved house, but since that fell through last year, and i have been doing well at work, i figured it was time for a DH rig.

Picked it up this afternoon. Needs a good clean/lube, and the forks/shock need servicing, but apart from that its ready to go. Appreciate its technically a FR bike, but geo wise, its pretty similar to the Demo/Big Hit/Sunday crowd (all of my shortlisted bikes), and it was only £420.

Spec wise, its pretty standard, apart from Ultegra mech, XTR shifter, new bars, Van R shock and Maxxis tyres

This is the advert pic. WIll post more once its been spruced up.

Nice one, saw this advertised on ride.io - bloody bargain! It's a decent rig for a first 'big' bike, nice and solid. Enjoy :)

Nice
Was wondering what sort of funky Reverb type thing you were running, then realised it was the outside tap!

I'd leave it as is if I were you for now, looks like it's in good nick to me. Reason I did mine is because the paint was absolutely shagged. It's hard to get a really good finish on it if you want to strip it - mine certainly isn't great, but it's better than it was.
I don't think Stinkys look as good rawed anyway, for some reason. It seems to suit Sundays pretty well.

Stripped down tonight, ready for cleaning

Image

All seems well, apart from the seatstay pivots. Seems to be a lot of friction there. When these have been unbolted the remaining pivots are all moving freely. Instead of bearings, there are only bushings in there. Seems an odd design to have where you want min friction, although it works fine for shocks. Perhaps a good clean and some lube will sort it.

Cleaning starts tomorrow

Aye those stinkys use bushings on the chainstay/seatstay pivots, not sure why. Maybe time for new bushings?

Perhaps. Will see what some lube does first.

Might be able to get needle bearings to fit them, you wouldn't get standard bearings small enough though.

potential option that

if lube doesn't work, then i may look into that

Shock is going to Loco for service. I've spent days trying to find a guide to servicing it (Fox Van R), but it seems that its inadvisable due to the nitrogen charge in the piggyback. TBH i may replace it purely for that reason, maybe for a Vivid coil. Lets see what its like after the service.

Servicing the Bombers tomorrow (provided the oil turns up from CRC on time)

yes coils. serviced them today. was surprised to find only one coil in there. after some panicked searching on Google, seems that is normal. they feel much better with new fluid in them.

Good progress tonight

Forks serviced, headset cleaned, BB cleaned and re-fit. Linkage back together. The seatstay bushings are marginally better with a load of lube, so will monitor.

Quick update

This afternoon i put the rear mech back on with new Goodridge cable, and put the front brake on so i could take Mr Stinks out for a mooch up and down the back lane.

Things i have learned

1. The brakes are sheeeeite. They may need a bleed, but even then im not happy about using them to stop. Short term fix will be to take the Formulas off the Spesh and use them until i have the cash for some new Deore M596.

2. I need a stiffer rear coil. Even with no armour or pre-load i was still getting 50% sag, so thats no use.

3. I may need a new coil in the front. I was getting 30% sag in normal clothes, but i had to put some air into the fork. Only 1.5 psi, but it stiffens the fork up loads. Without it i was getting around 40%. Have read quite a few negative reports about having to use the air pre-load, in that it makes the fork overly harsh. I can prob get 30% with armour, but will have to see how the forks feel as ill have to add prob another 1 psi.

Bike is getting its maiden test on the 23rd at Healey Nab. Then Stile Cop on the 27th (my birthday), and then again on the 1st at Antur.

Happy birthday to me :D

Jealous. I wish I had the time/money/ability/local trails to justify getting a bargain FR bike like that to mess around on. Look forward to seeing it built.
