Do standard tyres work in UST rims?

Postby jairaj » Tue Mar 05, 2013 22:22 pm

Quick tubeless question.

Do standard (Maxis Ignitor) tyres work fine in UST rims (Shimano XT wheelset) if I use sealant?

Is there something special about the bead on UST tyres or is just an extra layer making them air tight? Currently using Maxiss LUST tyres but fancy dropping some weight and using normal tyres and they're cheaper.

They work fine on my other wheel set made from Stans rims hoping same applies for UST rims too ...

Probably. No guarantees, with non-UST tyres but I've rarely had problems (had one Swampthing and a Panaracer that were like wizard's sleeves, and a Schwalbe TLR that wouldn't bead up- it went back on warranty though)

Ok thanks. I'll give it a quick go if it fails to seal I'll just stick a tube in.

Regular tyres are not generally airtight. You will need to use sealant inside the tyre to coat the inner surface and prevent the air gradually seeping out - on a ust rim no other worries - on a regular rim you will need rim tape as well (google 'ghetto tubeless').

No guarantee it works - some people and tyre/rim combos have more luck than others getting this to work.

Also consider that a regular tyre (unless its a dula bead or similarly beefed up tyre ) does not tend to have additional sidewall protection and support that help stave off pinch flats in rock gardens and dont provide as much support when cornering hard (you can get 'burping' of air as the tyre comes away from the bead for a moment).

If you classify or refer to your riding under hardcore, aggressive, gnar, shred(ing), extreme or similiar I'd avoid and get the real thing. If you just ride in a fairly 'normal' way on the trails and you can get it to work you'll save a few quid!

UST tyres have a special bead that locks into the UST rim - you still might need tape of some sort!
