Single Speed for the winter, will be nice to get some fast tyres on them once the days get a bit longer, plus more time to think about what crankset I want.

tis my only road bike but glad I built it myself because the stock build isn't all that good value imo..

and I don't like the bar tape either, natural cork my ass - more like beige.

I can't see the wheels!!!!!

Can you click the pic and see the whole thing through the link?

Not sure what happened there.

You just need a single speed conversion kit for Shimano free hub and a chain tensioner... then if you want you can replace your STI levers with some normal brake levers, although this is not compulsory
You can replace your chain set with a single speed one too and fit a single speed chain

Hi,

@snipsnap

Just stumbled upon this thread whilst researching the Croix der Fer.

I'm local-ish to H'fax and it sounds like I have the same requirements as you.

How're you finding the new bike?

How do you rate Cyclegear?

Cheers!

Really like the look if the bike. The guys in the shop were very knowledgable and helpful too.

Unfortunately involved in a smidsy incident this morning on my commute. Pretty sore, but the rear wheel took the brunt of the impact and is pretty much a write off.

Mechanic (great guy @ harry halls in manchester) informed me that the alexrims are discontinued so he suggested building some wheels up from mavic rims. Obviously will need to replace both. Spoke with the other party and all should be sorted. Mavic rims a good option for strength and weight?

Dunno. But H Plus Sons archetypes (32h) are great.

I know Harry Hall shop very well...
Assuming he is right about Alex rims... There are alternatives which do not involve replacing the spokes. One just has to check the ERD of the rim... There are rims available for all ERD.
Yours are 23 mm rims! So maybe a Kinlin 240 available at Sdeals.com might just do the trick.
There are other Alex rims at 23 mm too

EDIT: just realised the other party is paying... so yes, go for a full new build on Mavic Open PRO... go for the CD version which doesn't have the silver sidewall, but it is full matt grey, look the set I built above, they look great!
