Making a list of bike components needed for a build.

Postby littledove44 » Tue Mar 18, 2014 21:19 pm

I am doing a costing excercise for a bike that I am going to build myself.

To make sure I don't forget anything important I was wondering if anyone had a generic list of components that make up a bike.

Frame, wheels, saddle etc are easy, and I am sure I could probably do one if took my bike apart, but I thought a quick cut and paste may shortcut my process.

Many thanks.

Blu-Tac if you buy tubes with 48mm valves and deep-section aero wheels, as the valves rattle in the hole and the blu-tac stops it.

Copperslip to put on the pedal threads so that you can get them off when you next try.

Carbon paste for the seat tube, if you go down that path.

Bottle of red to celebrate a job well done.

Inline adjusters for the gear cables or adjusters to fit the braze-ons on an alloy frame, as required.

Cable ends listed above - is that the little caps for the cable inners? If so, you may also need some ferrules for the cable outers, different sizes for gear and brake. Cable sets may come with some, but if not you may need them or extras.

Steerer end-cap,
steerer bung/star-nut,
cable-guide under the BB-shell (if necessary).
helicopter tape / rubber sleeves to protect headtube from cable-rub (and vulnerable places wrt heli-tape).

Possible: chain-catcher/dogfang.

Dogfang thing. You'll be gutted if you don't fit one and ruin your frame.
And you'll need DECALS definitely DECALS. Lots of them.

A deda dog fang is a little hook thing you bolt to the seat tube just inside the smaller chain ring. If the chain comes off the smaller ring, then it catches on the dog fang, rather than falling onto the bottom bracket and scratching it up.

The dog fang needs a round seat tube though, so may not work on a carbon frame. However, there are other types of chain catcher that fit to the front mech mounting. Just have a Google on the two terms.
