Should i take food with me?

Postby haf1zur » Sat Oct 13, 2012 21:57 pm

Ok guys, tomorrow the plan is to do a 50 miler, first time doing such a distance, did a couple of 25 milers a couple of weeks ago and felt that i had a lot more to give

So far, only been taking water and hardly finish a 1/4 of the 750ml bottle i have

Would it be wise to take some bars and possibly an energy drink with me? going to head off straight after breakfast in the morning, hope to finish in 3 hours or so

I would simply because you can - don't worry about energy drinks per se, just water or water with some fruit juice in, take a sandwich or

simply because if you go past the time you normally eat lunch you'd be pretty empty towards the end of the ride, so eating something during the ride will give your stomach something to draw on if it needs it

most importantly, drink lots of fluids tonight and in the morning before you go

Make sure you're hydrated before you head out. Drink every 15 mins or so whilst you're out. Porridge for breakfast. Banana, energy bar, or malt loaf before the tail end of your ride. That should keep you right.

Personally I always take a banana on anything over ten miles. Some days you need it more than others, and it's there for when that time comes.

Remember to take a leak before you leave the house ;) It's indecent exposure if your not in the Tour of Britain.....

Basically what the other lad said, plenty of fluids on the run and a sandwich or bit of malt loaf etc just in case :D If you dont eat it on the run you can always feed the ducks when you get home :D

Better to take it and not need it than need it and not have......

No food is required for training under 4 hours.

I never bother up to 40 miles because there's just no need, if i'm out on a long one it'll be a small piece of flapjack every now and again with fluids taken little and often.

Yes, I think you should. Energy drink is fine too (just another source of carbs; no need to over complicate things), but don't shell out on lucozade or anything like that. Dextrose or fruit juice in water will do the same thing.

It depends on how hard you're working, really!

If you ride for 3 hours at a brisk pace you could easily be burning >2000kCal. You need to replace some of those calories at some point so there really is no reason to not eat something on a ride. Even a couple of bits of flapjack or soreen will mean you don't have to stuff your face after the ride. There's nothing cool about not eating on a ride - it doesn't make you a hard man.

Spot on.

For a 50 mile ride I'll usually take a gel bottle with a few High5 gels in it or a couple of Shot Blocs packets cut in half, couple of bits of Soreen in the jersey pocket too and probably a bottle with High5 2:1 in it and one with water (or both with 2:1 if the tempo is going to be high). An hour into the ride and the eating begins at 20 min intervals and it keeps me strong for the whole time.

The velominati isn't exactly credible advice.

Don't take any food then you'll realise what a silly question you've asked!

You should realistically be taking food on every ride.. even if its just an emergency gel on rides of less than 30 miles.

For 50 miles at a slow pace I'd be looking at:

2x Energy drink sachets (SIS Go Electrolyte energy drink is my favourite - lemon and lime mmmmm)
1x Banana
2x emergency gels

750ml per 1.5 hours
banana after 1.5 hours
emergency gels to get home if you struggle.

Thanks for the replies

3 bananas, 1.5 litres of sis orange and 4 go ahead bars later i am done

just under 4 hours for 49 miles, will have to do this again, targets keep moving

There is no other advice.

Seriously though, I take a banana, and usually refill some munchies at coffee shop before finishing ride.

I honestly had no idea that people actually take those rules seriously. I just thought they were a bit of attempted humour.

I hope they don't! I had never heard of them before I joined this forum. Stupid internet meme, and debatably not pervasive enough to be a 'meme' at all.

I run at about 30-40grms of carbs an hour for anything over a couple of hours. If I'm riding a long distance I try to start eating 20 mins in. My muscles get tired faster if I'm not eating quickly enough, unless its just a flat run.
