Domane, Rouibax or Scentron?

Postby Biker jon » Mon Oct 15, 2012 15:32 pm

Hello,

I currently commute daily on my Cube carbon MTB and am thinking about purchasing my first road bike for 2013. I want to set some goals and challenges such as the London to Brighton and London to Paris cycle rides. I want a bike that is comfortable as in 100 miles a day, light and fast. My budget is 4k and my current choice is:
Trek Domane 5.9
Specialized Rouibax SL4 DI2
Storck Scentron

Am waiting to test ride all 3, but in the meantime what would you choose?

Thank you

I don't think you can go wrong with any bike in that price range, that's a nice budget to have. Purely on looks i'd go for the Storck, plus its not a Trek or Specialized (for that amount of cash i'd want something out of the ordinary)!

a test ride would do it for me, but I am biaised, so it would probably be the Storck.

- whilst still waiting the opportunity to ride the Scentron, Rouibax and Domane, I have to agree that the Storck is a work of art and stunning just to look at. So out of the 3 and until I get to ride them, it is my first choice. However, from the reviews I have read it seems over priced for what it is as the reviews state there are just as capable bikes out there with DI2 for less money (their own Scenero G2?) - so that's why I find myself back with the Trek and Specialized.

for that I'd be looking at a venge and dealing with it being slightly uncomfortable at the end of a ride!

Also worth looking at the BMC SLR01 or the new GF01

Currently looking at similar bikes. I have a test ride booked for the Trek later this week (I hope). How tall are you? I'm pretty short and looking at the geometry the Storck looks like it may a lot more stretched out than the Trek (certainly in the smaller sizes). Have also been considering the Lapierre Sensium. Will be interested to see what you choose!

Love the removable mud guard eyes, this could be a very good all year round bike on the Trek. Surprised more brands don't do similar

I have a Roubaix (now relegated to winter bike), it's comfy but has always been a bit boring (very neutral ride - although that's not such a bad thing for long events). Although mine is a mid-range one from 2009 so I'd guess the frame is a bit stiffer and livelier these days (whilst maintaining comfort). If I were looking now for a £4k comfort bike, out of the three you list I'd probably go with the Domane, my only reservations would be annoying pronunciation and Trek's image atm due to their LA association, the bike itself would likely be worth it though.

For what it's worth I had the chance to have a close up look at a Domane a few weeks ago, and commented at the time it's the first Trek in years I thought looked genuinely desirable. The last ride report I read also pretty much lab led it as flawless - very comfortable but maintaining the stiffness where it matters. Given your requirements it seems to tick all the boxes.

Going mechanical rather than electric for the gears wouldn't deter me either. Should something go wrong on one of your 100 mile rides it would be easier to fix a mechanical issue at the roadside I guess.
