2009 Trek 1.2 BB help!

Postby wilky27 » Tue Oct 16, 2012 09:35 am

Hi,

I have a 2009 Trek 1.2 and the bottom bracket is making some horrific noises so I've decided to strip it down and re-grease the thing. The problem is I have no idea what model the BB is, so:

1. Does anyone know what BB is on this bike? The crank is a FSA Vero.
2. Does anyone know which tools I'll need to remove this BB?

Thanks in advance,
Wilky.

I think they are square taper, and on a 1.2 may well be a Shimano BB-UN25

It will also be cheaper for a shop to do it than buy the tools in this instance, unless you plan on doing it a few times. When I did mine it was a right pig to get the crankbolt off.

Will most BB tools fit that BB ? Like this for instance:

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_715087_langId_-1_categoryId_242558

Thanks.

but, not 100% the BB's are stripable (if thats a word) as I am sure they are sealed. A replacement may be needed.

Will any shimano do or will I need to get the BB-UN25 ? I might as well upgrade if it needs replacing.

I think there are some compatibilty specs on the shimano websites. As they go up spec, I think they go to octolink (if thats correct) etc

UN 26 is sora spec
UN 53 Tiagra,

They are square taper, not sure if they are compatible though mate, would take a bit of googling.

The best way of course is to take it out and see what it is. FSA may requre something altogether different.

So..

1 Don't take it to a bike shop.
2 Buy tools to do yourself.
3 After a bit of screaming, throw in towel and ignore number 1
4 Once you have watched how they do it at shop (10 mins later ) you are good for next time and have the tools.
5 You then know if/what your BB is to then get another

Had to get the lump hammer on it but manged it. 3 for 2 in halfords too so got crank removal tool, BB nut, tub of copper grease and the new BB for less than £30. Jobs a good un.

Thanks for your help pal.
