What is with all the punctures?!

Postby curium » Thu Nov 01, 2012 10:11 am

I have been riding all year (including in France over the summer) and have had zero punctures.

I've had 2 this week and 4 since the beginning of October!

Is there a link between riding in wet weather and punctures?

I find the crap on the road does stick to the tyres more when wet, or it may be just there is more washed around the road in wet conditions?

Wet rubber cut far easier than dry rubber. You see loads more punctures in the wet.

Doesn't help that it washes flint off the sides of the road and the farmers are cutting the hawthorn and the students are back which generally means more glass in the road still.

Most definitely you get more punctures in the wet! As pointed out above, wet rubber is softer and the rain and bad weather generally flicks up bits of grit, glass and thorns all overthe road surface, then cars and passing traffic spread it even further over the road.... When it's dry cars tend to blow and flick debris to the side of the road

Water lubricates puncture shrapnel and softens tyres.

I thought I had one yesterday but it was just a leaf under my brake pad.
I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.

I've fitted them to both my bikes in the winter, they look durable enough but are VERY heavy, they'll take some getting used to.

Every year I see an increase when wet, apparently wet rubber is penetrated alot easier than dry.

That seems to be the way with Gatorskins, only ever pinch or get hit by something big and bad enough to destroy the tyre.
