How On Earth Do You Keep Your Face Warm?

Postby Scrappaman » Mon Nov 05, 2012 20:47 pm

Hi All,

Things have turned a little cold as of late and I am finding that my only cold spot is my face!
I have a buff and a thicker gaiter but these only seem to make my glasses steam up, so I am in search of a solution.

I have seen some balaclava style products such as these:
http://www.evanscycles.com/products/gor ... r-ec040959
http://www.evanscycles.com/products/mav ... a-ec038256

I have no problem buying these if they keep my face warm; I don't mind looking like some gimp-come-robber. But, I would like to know if anyone has any experience or recommendations as to how to keep the face warm in the cold wind!

Any help or advice is appreciated!

Thanks as always,

Matt

I have always managed with a buff, the only time my glasses steam up are when i stop at traffic lights etc. Once i start moving they clear within a few yards. Please note that i can still see well enough steamed up to ride safely. My buff managed to keep me warm down to -6 last year. I have got a balaclava but use that when im out walking in the hills / mountains. I might be tempted with the gore mask if it gets really cold though.

A thick smearing of goose fat?

Seriously though I think if you (in general, not you personally) get too warm you perspire more and as soon as that wind gets to your skin you feel even colder. So my theory is wrap up warm but not too warm and the cold is bearable.

In the very coldest weather one of these helps too...

I left work tonight at 22:10 with a buff around my neck and one under my helmet, the one around my neck was pulled up over my nose but after 2 miles I pulled them both off as I was too warm. Both of the buffs cost me £4.95 with a free copy of C+ thrown in.

I reckon that my Movember effort made a discernable difference this morning. On that basis and if I had hobbit toes, my feet could be warmer...

I wear a buff to protect cheeks and ears when it's cold (not yet then - cold is sub -3C), however my buff did try and kill me last year as all of a sudden in froze solid over my mouth (OK it was -8C that morning)....

Buff over my nose, mouth and neck and a head condom hat thing over my head under my helmet.

I don't bother - numbness sets in after a while so it fine. Hands bother me more.

Gore face warmer, excellent piece of kit, allows you to breathe and unlike buffs, doesn't get clammy / wet. Also keeps your ears warm.

Man up you wimps - its not even approaching cold yet :D :D

As long as the rest of me is wrapped up warm I don't tend to have a probelem with my face to be honest.

I have a winter helmet -a bern - which has less vent holes than road helmet and when it gets really cold there is a woolly liner thing that keeps your ears and back of neck warm. If thats on my face isn't a problem.

Tuck your tutu in and cycle faster princess... won't warm your face up but you'll spend less time in the cold.

Definitely a beard. Buff second, never have it over my mouth though, they get too soggy.

I had massively painful sinuses at the weekend though, hoping the tache will solve that.

To reduce steaming up on your glasses give them a clean, then massage in a small amount of washing up liquid.

Personally I can't stand a cold head, a skull cap solves that, but the face doesn't bother me until my tears and nose hairs start to freeze, then it's just funny.
I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.

Beard works well :)

Still, I can cope with my face getting cold, as long as I can keep my ears warm, so a skull cap that covers the ears is just the job for me.
