shimano 5600 compatible with 5700??

Postby clunkychunky » Wed Nov 14, 2012 20:41 pm

I need a new shimano double shifter after my 5600 series broke (the right shifter still works fine).
I always assumed that shimano components were all compatible no matter what model, so was looking at getting a 5700 left shifter. However, i have been told today by 2 different cyclists from my club that the 5700 won't be compatible with my 5600 double chainset and 5600 brakes.
does anyone know if this is true??

thanks in advance

Here you go Compatible
Rule #5 // Harden The fark Up.
Rule #9 // If you are out riding in bad weather, it means you are a badass. Period.
Rule #12 // The correct number of bikes to own is n+1.
Rule #42 // A bike race shall never be preceded with a swim and/or followed by a run.

As I interpret that chart, they're not officially compatible, no 5600 parts are listed in the 5700 row or vice-versa.

I've been looking into this recently as I'm trying to put a 105 groupset together. They changed the chainring spacing between the 5600 and 5700 series (1mm closer together in the latter IIRC), so whilst using a 5700 shifter is probably possible, you're more likely to get chain rub in certain combos since the range of travel your front derailleur won't be travelling as great.

Probably ok as a temp solution, but personally I'd try to pick up a new left hand shifter on eBay, they're cropping up on there all the time and will prob be significantly cheaper than a 5700 one.

Hope that helps!

5700 brifters with 5700 brake calipers are claimed to be more efficient than 5600 series, but the 5600 calipers will work as well as they ever did.

Ahh, unless you're running a triple, in which case they are interchangeable. The above is assuming you're running a double/compact.

no, i use a double.

i have been looking on ebay but only the 5600 model left shifters seem to come up, and the reason for that is the fault with them.

what was the fix model they launched? was it 5601??

Also, the 5700 cables are under the bar tape, so your shifters will look different.
Incidentally, I have had no issues with cable drag for the under-tape routing after 1 year commuting, minimum maintenance and 3000 miles in all weathers.

Everything should be fine.

Ive got a brand new set of 105 5700 2x10 shifters coming from germany to fit on my 2012 Caad8 which has 5600 brakeset, chainset, front mech and rear derailleur, ive also got a 105 5700 10 speed cassette (12-25) and 5701 10 speed chain on their way to me from CRC.

When I spoke to tech guy at CRC during a 20 min chat on phone, he told me there would be no compatibility issues at all and was super positive about the 5700 shifters. Said the 5700 cassette was the way to go and far superior to the 10 spd tiagra 4600 model.

Im real excited about my caad8 having full 105 groupset and taking the 9 speed sora shifters and 9 speed cassette off the bike is something im really looking forward to :D

Personally, I wouldn't take the word of someone trying to sell me stuff as gospel, but then I'm a cynical git!!! :D

Like we've said, it'll do the job, but might be less than optimal performance (e.g. longer brake lever travel). I'm sure Shimano mess around with chainring spacings and cable pull ratios between the series just to make you feel as though you should be upgrading your whole groupset when something like this happens. Again, maybe that's just cos I'm very cynical! :?

And don't get me wrong, I love CRC. Their component sale atm has some very tasty bargains!
