Carbon Frame Crack....opinions please.

Postby zammmmo » Sat Nov 17, 2012 17:26 pm

About to buy a used SL3 from a private buyer. Only downside is there are two crack perhaps around 15mm long on either side of the (sizeable) down tube where the owner said he clamped the bike into a roof rack in August. He said he's ridden it since and cleaned the bike and not noticed either crack getting any longer. He also has said his LBS (where I viewed the bike twice as a relative works there) has confirmed it's only in the paint. Please see the photo attached (apols for the bad quality - suppose it's better than nothing)....opinions please as I am quite cautious with these things. Many thanks....

Sorry but what crack, I can only see some pixels!

However if in any doubt, don't buy it.

Have you asked at the LBS? Better than people on here trying to diagnose from a poor photo. You would need a hefty discount on the new price to consider it.

Is the crack in the carbon or in the laquer? Hard to tell from your photo

Yeah the photo is a zoom-in of a photo I took side-on and don't have a sharper photo. like i say, the LBS (they were selling it on behalf of someone who was related to one of the shop staff, it was just convenient to show case the bike there) have said its only in the paint. have to say most people i've asked about this on the web fwiw have said leave it. the bike is a beauty and fairly rare, and relatively cheap despite the owner saying it's generated alot of interest.

i think its in the laquer but i am no expert. its the kind of thing i didnt think was so much of an issue at the time of viewing because there are so many aspects to consider when checking out a bike. i would now feel like i'd be "taking a chance" with the purchase.

Specialized and rare? An oxymoron surely?
Unless they can produce evidence to the contrary, then assume it's cracked - one of my carbon frames has been cracked for years and I carry on riding it.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

Only being *displayed* in the shop - nothing technically to do with them. I'd have zero come-back with the shop.

Would you ever be sure it's only in the laquer? When absolutely bombing it down a long steep hill, do you want to have any doubts lingering? Sorry, but walk on by.

I would steer clear. Lots of second hand sl3 around, the guy who owns it wants shot of it bc of the crack which itself speaks volumes!
g
Hi , it's to reply to the above , the bike in question belongs to me . I'm only selling the bike because I've bought a brand new one , so if it wasn't for this I would be keeping the bike in question . The guy who seemed keen to buy the bike has viewed it twice ,test ridden it and asked myself and the guys in the shop many many questions about it and the so called cracks , these marks are cracks in the lacquer and were caused by me when the bike was put onto a roof rack in August . The cracks in the frame are not in an area where failures occur ie bottom bracket , rear drop outs etc , the local specialized dealer has told me this , and since August I've been riding the bike without a worry . What disappoints me is how people can pass comments based on viewing a grainy photo , you have probably cost me the sale of my bike and to
One poster I didn't want to get rid as you state cheers for that!!'

To be fair mate - of the 6 people that responded, only 2 said walk on by, the others didn't commit. If the bloke who viewed it was as concerned as you say he was - 2 viewings, test ride, numerous LBS questions and still came on here for reassuring, I reckon he'd already made his mind up not to buy.

I'd buy it if the LBS were happy to issue some sort of refund guarantee if the cracks turned out to be not just cosmetic.
I don't think anyone can draw any real sensible conclusion from looking at that grainy photo.

If its just cracked paint then get it repaired, very few people will buy carbon kit with visible damage. Not least it suggests the bike hasn't been well cared for.

I'd be curious just how the LBS could confirm it's only the paint that's cracked and not the frame - do they xray it? Or is it just an inspection by eye?

Personally I wouldn't trust an LBS on it, I'd want some guarantee from a manufacturer or carbon specialist.

The specialized dealer who looked at the cracks said that he'd never seen a frame with cracks in that area before , he's been in the trade 35 years and I his opinion and mine the cracks are in the paint . I've even offered the guy assurances that if there are any warranty issues I would as first owner sort them out as specializeds warranty is first owner only . What disappoints me is that he choose to post on here and possibly listen to the advice of 14 year olds or hybrid riders just back from the pub, based on a grainy photo showing what ? A tiny mark ?

if its a big deal that he walked away from the sale and its only a crack in the laquer then im sure it wont take long to find a buyer for it. If somebody asks for an opinion freedom of speech allows people to make their feelings known. Im sure if it was the other way round you may ask questions and take people opinions onboard. Coming on to slag people off for voicing an opinion that may have cost you a sale seems a bit off?

Add to the list of people that commented me, I would look at it myself and make my own mind up but if i was in doubt i would look for another as there is plenty of them out there.
